United States’ Vincent Hancock bags his ninth World Cup gold in Changwon

Final Skeet Men

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

Equaling once again the World Record of 59 hits, the United States’ athlete climbed atop the World Cup podium for the second time in two stages. To do so, he prevailed over the current Olympic Champion — Italy’s Gabriele Rossetti — with an advantage of 4 hits.
The final event of the ISSF World Cup Stage 2 in Changwon (KOR) awarded United States’ shooter Vincent Hancock with the Skeet Men gold medal: his second in 2018 after the one he claimed in Guadalajara (MEX) last March.

At the new Changwon International Shooting Range, Hancock started off by hitting all of his first 35 targets, then missing his one and only on station number 4. As the gap on Italy’s Gabriele Rossetti (23) grew slowly, but steadily, the American 29-year-old didn’t look back, shooting perfectly for the rest of the final and finishing with 59 hits out of 60 clays, while Rossetti — the current Olympic and World Champion — took silver with 55, pocketing the third World Cup medal of his stellar career.

Furthermore, just like he did in Guadalajara, Hancock equaled the current World Record in the Skeet Men event, set by Italy’s Riccardo Filippelli and Great Britain’s Ben Llewellin at the 2017 ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi (IND).

“It’s been a great match,” said Hancock after the medal ceremony. “All worked well in the final, I just had to change my lenses a couple of times because of the clouds coming in and out.”

“The plan is to be the best shooter at every competition, on every station, on every target, right up to when it will matter the most, Tokyo 2020,” he added.

“This range is fantastic,” he concluded “I shot here in 2005 and it’s changed and improved a lot. This match have been a useful training for the ISSF World Championship to be held here in September, when the first quotas will be assigned.”

Taking bronze with 43 hits out of 50, Spain’s Juan Jose Aramburu (36) won the fourth World Cup medal of his career, celebrating his 50th start in the ISSF World Cup Series and adding it to the three other bronzes he won in 2006, 2013 and 2016.

The following positions were taken by France’s Anthony Terras and Kuwait’s Mansour Al Rashedi: the French 32-year-old — winner of the World Championship silver medal in Lonato (ITA) in 2015, behind Hancock and ahead of Rossetti — concluded with 33 hits out of 40 clays, missing three of them from station number 4 and failing to climb atop the podium for what would’ve been his sixth World Cup medal.

33-year-old Al Rashedi, instead, paid a costly streak of three consecutive missed at the end of the first round, which made him slip in 5th place and leave the match with 25 clay hits out of 30.

Finally, at the 20-target mark, the first shooter to be eliminated from the match was Republic of Korea’s Lee Jongjun, who finished with 15 hits and placed 6th in his second World Cup participation, besting the 21st position he obtained in Gabala (AZE) in 2015.

The 2018 ISSF World Cup Series will continue next month in Fort Benning (USA), where the third stage of the season is scheduled from May 7th to May 15th.

The match will be streamed live on the ISSF website, on the Federation’s Livestream channel and on its official Facebook page.

Live results, news and updates will be available on www.issf-sports.org and on all ISSF social media platforms: FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTubeWeibo and Youku.

Kimberly Rhode beats own world record to win Skeet gold in Changwon

Final Skeet Women

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

Finishing atop of the podium with 3 targets of advantage on her followers, the US champion claimed the second world cup gold medal of the season in a row.
USA’s six-time Olympic medalist Kimberly Rhode won her second ISSF world cup gold medal back to back, today, in Changwon, South Korea, where the second leg of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series is held from the 20th through the 29th of April.

The 38-year old American shooter had already won the first world cup stage of the season, in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Today, she shattered her own world record of 56 hits, smashing 58 targets throughout the final to finish atop of the podium ahead of Great Britain’s Amber Hill, and of her teammate Amber English.

“Never give up!” She said, right after the medal ceremony. She had indeed started the qualification series with a frustrating 22-hit series, yesterday morning, and finished in fourth place with a score of 119 targets. But with the new ISSF rules the qualification score is not carried forward into the final, which now consists of 60 targets.

“I am amazed, it just keeps going and I am trying to ride that wave, one world cup after another,” she continued. “I couldn’t be more thrilled, it has been an amazing competition at a beautiful range, here in South Korea.”

“Walking out of here with a new world record wasn’t something that I expected, it’s just something that happens,” Rhode added. “When I was out there, I was focusing on one target at the time, and I didn’t really know where I stood until the very end.”

“At the end of the day, I am humbled by it all, it feels amazing.”

Great Britain’s Amber Hill, 20, followed Rhode in second place with a total score of 55 hits, collecting her second world cup medal back to back, after Guadalajara’s bronze. She bested the second American finalist, 28-year old Amber English, who took today’s bronze medal with 44 hits coming back onto an ISSF podium after missing since 2016.

Italys’ 2010 World Cup Champion Katiuscia Spada, 36, followed the medalists in 4th place with 34 hits, while two first-time finalists - Natalia Szamrej of Poland and Vanessa Hauff of Germany - closed the match in 5th and 6th place with 22 and 14 targets, respectively.

Over 800 athletes from 70 nations have been competing in this ISSF World Cup in Changwon, which also servers as a test event for the 52nd ISSF World Cup in all events to be hosted here in September. The competition will come to an end tomorrow afternoon, when the last medal match - the men’s Skeet final - will be held at 16.30 Korean Standard Time (GMT+9).

18-year-old Wang Zeru claims 0.1-point victory in her World Cup debut

Final 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

The Chinese shooter made her first World Cup appearance in Changwon (KOR), taking gold at the end of an intense battle with Austria’s Franziska Peer, who finished in 2nd place. The bronze medal was awarded do Slovenia’s Ziva Dvorsak.
In the one and only final scheduled for today at the ISSF World Cup Stage 2 in Changwon (KOR), the People’s Republic of China pocketed its fourth gold medal of the competition with 18-year-old shooter Wang Zeru, who ruled the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions event.

Making her first appearance in an ISSF World Cup, Wang took the lead at the end of the second standing series, overtaking Austria’s Franziska Peer and landing on top of the podium at the end of a thrilling duel with her more experienced rival. As she held a 1.9-point advantage with two shots left to fire, in fact, the young Chinese shooter nailed a bad 8.4, allowing Peer to erase the gap and tie the score with a good 10.3. In their 45th and final shot, both shooters fired outside of the 10th ring, and Wang’s 9.9 was just good enough to best her rival’s 9.8.

The 18-year-old Chinese talent then finished with 458.3 points, adding the World Cup gold to the Air Rifle bronze she won at last month’s Junior World Cup in Sydney (AUS). Instead, 30-year-old Peer — who was atop the table at the end of both the kneeling and prone positions — finished with 458.2 points, doubling the World Cup silver she won in Baku (AZE) in 2016.

The bronze medal was awarded to Slovenia’s two-time Olympian Ziva Dvorsak — bearer of the highest qualification score with 178 points — who took 3rd place with 445.4 points.

The two shooters eliminated at the 40th-shot mark were Germany’s 23-year-old Jolyn Beer and Republic of Korea’s 24-year-old Lee Eunseo: Beer — who currently leads the World Ranking in this event — placed 7th with 403.8 points, while Lee concluded in 8th position, scoring 398.7 points in her first final participation.

One shot later they were followed by Ukraine’s Anna Ilina, also a first-time finalist, who placed 6th with 414.4 points, and by Japan’s 27-year-old Shimizu Ayano, who concluded 5th with 424.6. Furthermore, both of them nailed the best World Cup placement of their career: Ilina, indeed, pulverized the 51st place she obtained in Gabala (AZE) in 2015, while Shimizu slightly improved the 6th position she took last year in New Delhi (IND).

A second Chinese finalist — Rio 2016 silver medalist Zhang Binbin (29) — finished in 4th place, slipping out of the podium with a disappointing 8.7 in her 43rd shot and signing off with 434.9 points.

Final 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

Rio 2016 Silver medalist said the new range of Changwon, where the next World Championship will be held, is “excellent and well built”, after winning a world cup gold medal with 460.6 points, today.
The 2018 ISSF World Cup in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events in Changwon, Republic of Korea, keeps on rolling. Some 800 athletes coming from 70 countries are here to compete in the 15 Olympic shooting events, and to test the venue that will be used for the 52nd ISSF World Championship in all shooting events, in September.

Day-5 of the competition opened with the men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions final, won by Rio 2016 Olympic Silver medalist Sergey Kamenskiy of the Russian Federation.

The 30-year old shooter started-off the final with 153.7 points in the Kneeling position, which he closed in second place. He then moved in the lead with 310.0 points after the Prone position. In the Standing, he added 150.6 points to his score, closing atop of the podium with a total tally of 460.6 points.

Kamenskiy beat Italy’s five-time Olympian Marco De Nicolo, 41, who followed today’s winner in second place with 459.0 points.

21-year old Istvan Peni of Hungary, a bronze medallist at last year’s ISSF World Cup final, scored a 9.2 on his last Standing shot to finish in third place with 448.2 points, jut 0.4 behind De Nicolo at the time of the elimination. With a total of 448.2 points he claimed his second world cup Bronze of the season.

“I was really concentrated and confident, today. I tried to do my best, and the final went just great.” Today’s winner Kamenskiy, said after the match.

“The conditions were perfect. The wind was not too annoying, the temperature was great,” he continued. “The new shooting range itself is excellent: both the qualifications and the final hall are very very well built, and the lighting is state of art.

“Technically, everything was easy today. Mentally, there was a lot of pressure into the game: this is a world cup event, this is a test for the world championship, everybody wants to shoot good scores here.”

Following the medallists, USA’s Matthew Emmons survived a shoot-off against Belarus’ Yury Shcherbatsevich after shot #42, but was then eliminated one shot later, placing in fourth with 436.2 points, ahead of the same Shcherbatsevich, fifth with 426.7 points.

At the same time, local media’s spotlights were on the home athlete, Kim Jonghyun, who finished in seventh place with 404.8 points. Kim had started the match in the best way, leading the Kneeling position with 153.9 points. He kept in touch with the top of the scoreboard throughout the Prone position, just a few tenths behind Kamenskiy, with 310.0 points. But with two Standing series of 46.6 and 48.2 points he slid down, closing the match behind Petar Gorsa of Croatia (6th with 416.4 points). He left the match at the first elimination, along with India’s Sanjeev Rajput, who placed in 8th with 395.7 points after firing a shot in the 6th ring on his last Standing series.

Belarus’ Viktoria Chaika claims last-shot victory in the Air Pistol final

Final 10m Air Pistol Women

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

The Belarusian experienced 37-year-old signed an outstanding comeback, winning her country’s first medal at the ISSF World Cup Stage 2 in Changwon (KOR), also preceding silver medalist Ji Xiaojing of the People’s Republic of China and bronze medalist Zorana Arunovic of Serbia.
An action-packed day at the Changwon International Shooting Range opened with the 10m Air Pistol Women final, where Viktoria Chaika of Belarus pocketed the gold medal, overtaking People’s Republic of China’s Ji Xiaojing at the very last shot.

After leading for 23 of the 24 shots, in fact, the 29-year-old Chinese shooter nailed a bad series of six consecutive shots inside the 9th ring, progressively losing the gap that she previously built and slipping down in 2nd place at the decisive moment.

On the other hand, Chaika, who was standing 5.7 points behind Ji after four series, fired an impressive streak of good shots, including three 10.8 and two 10.7, sealing the win with a 10.8-10.1 combination that sent her on the highest step of the podium with 241.7 points, 0.5 more than Ji’s 241.2.

The Belarusian five-time Olympian won the seventh World Cup medal of her outstanding career.

The Bronze medal was awarded to Serbia’s Zorana Arunovic (31) who finished with 219.2 points and stepped back on the World Cup podium three years after the last time, while her 28-year-old teammate Bobana Momcilovic Velickovic, instead, missed the podium by 2.1 points, finishing in 4th position and scoring 196.5 points.

A second Chinese shooter — first-time World Cup participant Xiong Yaxuan (21) — placed 5th with 176.4 points.

Home favorite Kim Jangmi followed in 6th place, going down two positions in a decisive moment: the 25-year-old shooter of the Republic of Korea fired a disappointing 9.7-9.5 combo in the fifth series, finishing with 157.8 points and missing what would have been the first medal of the competition for the host country.

Two Olympic silver medalist placed in the bottom positions, as France’s 31-year-old Celine Goberville — who placed 2nd at London 2012 in this event — concluded in 7th place with 136.0 points, while Russian Federation’s 21-year-old Vitalina Batsarashkina — who climbed on the second step of the podium at Rio 2016 — took 8th place with 116.5, losing a shoot-off against her French rival.

World Champ Kim shatters Rapid Fire Pistol’s world record on his home turf

Final 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

The Korean athlete scored 38 hits leaving the 2016 Olympic Champion Reitz in second, to win his first ISSF gold medal in four years. The World Champion title won in Granada, Spain, in 2014 had been his last victory in the ISSF circuit, and he’s now preparing to defend it.
The reigning world champion Kim Junhong ruled today’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men Final in front of his home crowd, at the 2018 ISSF World Cup in Changwon, Republic of Korea.

The 27-year old shooter turned out to be unbeatable for his opponents: with a final score of 38 hits he shattered the world record of 35 hits, finishing atop of the podium with 4 hits of advantage on his followers.

Closing his competition with a four consecutive perfect 5-hit series, the Korean shooter bested the 2016 Olympic Champion Christian Reitz of Germany, who ended up in second with 34 hits.

Another German athlete, 26-year old Oliver Geis - the 2015 European Games champion - followed them in third place with 29 hits. Geis survived a shoot-off after shot #30, beating the second Korean finalist Song Jong Ho 4 to 3 hits to avoid the elimination. Song ended up in fourth, with a score of 25 hits.

Coming in fifth, the 2010 World Champion Alexei Klimov of the Russian Federation scored 18 hits, after passing through a shoot-off (won by 4 hits to 3) against France’s Boris Artaud, sixth with 15 hits.

“It feels great to win this gold on my home turf, it has been a great match in a great atmosphere,” said gold medallist Kim after the final. “I had been far from the podium for so long, but now I am working on it.”

“In September, I will be competing here in Changwon to defend my world title. I am not at my best conditions yet, but I am working hard to prepare for the Championship,” he added.

The 2018 ISSF World Championship in all shooting events will be held here in Changwon, from the 31st of August through the 15th of September, and will assign the first Olympic quota places for Tokyo 2020.

This world cup serves also a test event of the venue, a well-known shooting range which has been totally reconstructed to host the World Championship, where some 2.000 athletes are expected to compete in over 50 Olympic and non-Olympic shooting events.

The world cup is set to continue right to the 30th of April. One additional medal event is on today’s schedule: the Trap Mixed Team final, that will take place at 16.30 Korean Standard Time (GMT+9).

Chernousov wins breathtaking final by 0.2 to secure Air Pistol gold

Final 10m Air Pistol Men

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

The Russian athlete went from having 4.1 points of advantage on his followers after the 18th shot, down to a thin margin of 0.2 ahead of the 24th and last shot. He beat India’s world record holder Rizvi, and Bulgaria’s Donkov.
Artem Chernousov, from the Russian Federation, won a breathtaking 10m Air Pistol Men final at the 2018 ISSF World Cup in Changwon, Republic of Korea, today.

The 22-year old shooter beat India’s Shahzar Rizvi and Bulgaria’s Samuil Donkov to climb atop of the podium with a total score of 240.0 points. The two-time European Junior Champion (2015, 2016) had never won an ISSF World Cup medal before, his best placement so far being a 16th place achieved in Gabala, Azerbaijan, last year.

Chernousov moved into the lead after the first ten shots (110.6 points). From there on, shot after shot, he started building a solid margin over his followers. By the 18th shot, he had collected 181.9 points, and a huge advantage of 4.1 points on his opponents.

Then, the match turned into a rollercoaster ride. Chernousov fired an 8.9 and a 9.4 shots, losing most of his lead. At the same time, behind him, Rizvi nailed a series of great shots, including a 10.9 on his 21st shot, coming as close as 0.2 points.

The last shot decided the final: Rizvi could not best Chernousov’s 10.0, and placed himself in second with a total score of 239.8 points. Nevertheless, today’s performance confirmed the great momentum of 23-year old Rizvi, who recently won the inaugural world cup stage of the season in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he also set a new world record of 242.3 points.

The Bronze medal went to Bulgaria’s Olympian Samuil Donokov, 34, who claimed his first ISSF medal in career with 217.1 points.

The 2006 Junior World Champion Pu Qifeng, 32, from the People’s Republic of China, followed the medalists in fourth place with 196.1 points, finishing ahead of Vietnam’s 43-year old Tran Quoc Cuong, fifth with 176.2 points.

Coming in sixth, Ukraine’s Oleh Omelchuk scored 155.6 points, while his teammate Viktor Bankin marked 113.0 points to finish in eighth place. Dividing them, Slovakia’s Juraj Tuzinsky placed in seventh with 135.5 points.

The 208 ISSF World Cup in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events in Changwon, Republic of Korea, is the second leg of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series. Over 800 athletes from 70 nations are taking part in the competition, that also servers as a test event for the 52nd ISSF World Championship in all Shooting events, to be held here in September.

The competition will continue this afternoon with the men’s Trap final. As it happened yesterday at the women’s event, the weather - rainy and windy - has been playing a big role in the qualification series.

Finland’s Satu Makela-Nummela claims Trap gold in the rain

Final Trap Women

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

The 2008 Olympic Champion beat Fatima Galvez and Alessandra Perilli to take the brightest medal in a cold, windy and rainy day in Changwon, in the first official shotgun competition held at the new shooting range that will be used for the 2018 ISSF World Championship to be hosted here in September.
The weather conditions plaid a big role in today’s Trap Women final at the 2018 ISSF World Cup in Changwon (KOR). The temperature dropped this morning, as rain started falling and wind blowing.

In spite of it, at the end of the qualifications, San Marino’s Alessandra Perilli finished atop of the scoreboard with a new qualification world record of 122 hits out of 125 targets.

“I love to shoot in the rain,” she said. “I know it sounds strange, but I give my best when the weather is at its worst.”  Tables turned during the final, tough. Perilli started-off by missing three targets out of her first five, while Spain’s Fatima Galvez and Finland’s Satu Makela-Nummela overtook her.

After the first 25 targets, it was Russian Federation’s Tatiana Barsuk who was eliminated, taking the sixth place with 16 hits. She was followed by Australia’s Penny Smith, the winner of last year’s ISSF World Cup in New Delhi, who closed the match in fifth with 20 hits out of 30 targets.

Perilli fought neck and neck against China’s Wang Xiaojing right to the 35th target, when she eventually left her opponents in fourth with 23 hits, advancing to take the Bronze with 27 hits out of 40 targets.

The duel for the Gold medal between Galvez and Makela-Nummela was decided by the last two series.

31-year old Galvez missed three targets out of 10, eventually placing herself in second place with 37 total hits.

At the same time, the 2008 Olympic Champion Makela-Nummela zeroed in, and hit 9 out of her last 10 targets, finishing atop of the podium with a total score of 41 hits. The Finnish shooter had won her last ISSF World Cup gold medal back in 2016.

Australia’s first-time finalist Galiabovitch beats China’s Lin at the end of a spectacular final

Final 25m Pistol Women

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Changwon, KOR

The 28-year-old Aussie took the first World Cup medal of her career in Changwon (KOR), prevailing over People’s Republic of China’s Lin Yuemei after two thrilling shoot-off series. Yao Yushi, also of the People’s Republic of China, took bronze.
The second competition day at the ISSF World Cup Stage 2 in Changwon (KOR) opened with an exciting final in the 25m Pistol Women event, as Australia’s Elena Galiabovitch took her first World Cup medal after a spectacular duel with People’s Republic of China’s Lin Yuemei.

In fact, after they both concluded the match with 34 hits, Galiabovitch and Lin had to go through a shoot-off to determine the gold and the silver medalist, both scoring 2 hits in their first additional round and winning the applauses of a packed finals hall. In the second, decisive tie-breaker, then, the Australian 28-year-old prevailed with 3 hits against 2, pocketing the gold medal and adding it the the silver she won on April 10th at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast (AUS).

The silver won by 24-year-old Lin is the third medal for the People’s Republic of China in this competition, as they already secured the gold-bronze combo in yesterday’s 10m Air Rifle Women event.

A similar tie-breaker was needed to determine the first elimination of the final, as Germany’s Monika Karsch and France’s Celine Goberville were tied with 10 points apiece after four series: indeed, it took two additional shoot-off rounds for the German 35-year-old to prevail over the French 31-year-old, who then left the match in 8th place and failed to add a medal to the three World Cup silvers she won in this event between 2010 and 2012.

Karsch eventually landed in 7th position with 11 hits.

Appearing in her first international competition ever, 28-year-old Yao Yushi, also of the People’s Republic of China, took bronze with 30 hits, while India’s 27-year-old Rahi Sarnobat — who previously signed the highest qualification score with 588 points — took 4th place with 26.

Four-time Olympian Zsofia Csonkia of Hungary — European Champion in this event in Maribor (SLO) in 2015 — followed in 5th position, matching her best result in this event for the fifth time since 2007 and signing off with 20 hits.

Serbia’s 31-year-old Zorana Arunovic placed 6th with 15.

The ISSF World Cup Stage 2 in Changwon will continue this afternoon with two more finals: the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team, taking place at 1:45 pm (UTC+9:00), and the Trap Women, scheduled at 4:15 pm.

The competition will be streamed live on the ISSF website, on the Federation’s Livestream channel and on its official Facebook page.

Live results, news and updates will be available on www.issf-sports.org and on all ISSF social media platforms: FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTubeWeibo and Youku.
