An amazing Skeet Men final crowns Italy’s Riccardo Filippelli

Italy’s 37-year-old shooter beat his own World Record along with Great Britain’s Ben Llewellin, then besting his British rival in a thrilling shoot-off for the Gold medal, while Argentina’s first-time participant Federico Gil took Bronze.
Day 3 of the ISSF World Cup Final at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi (IND) close with an outstanding duel to decide the winner of the men’s Skeet title.

At the end of the match, it was Italy’s Riccardo Filippelli who raised the trophy, as he prevailed over Great Britain’s 23-year-old Ben Llewellin after a tie-breaking shoot-off made necessary by their unbelievable shooting: both the Italian and the British, in fact, crushed 59 out of 60 targets, co-signing the new Skeet Men World Record.

In took only four more clays, however, to see Llewellin miss his second target of the match, a costly mistake that Filippelli quickly exploited, winning the first ISSF crystal globe of his career and leaving Llewellin in 2nd place.

“I love this range, it’s very beautiful and you can see the targets quite clearly,” said Filippelli, who took Gold at this year’s World Cup stage in New Delhi, where he set the previous World Record with 57 hits. “Then, of course, I was in great shape, I beat my own record and I’m taking this huge trophy home with me!”

“Being a World Cup Final, those were supposed to be the 12 best shooters in the world,” added the 37-year-old. “So the high-level of the match didn’t surprise me. There was only one thing I could do: not miss my second target.”

“Now I will take a couple of months off, I want to rest a while and spend some time with my friends and my girlfriend,” he concluded.

First-time World Cup Final participant Federico Gil (29) of Argentina completed the podium in 3rd place, adding another achievement to the first World Cup Gold of his career, won in Larnaka (CYP) last May. Gil, number 7 in the World Ranking, only missed one of his 50 targets, taking Bronze because of a lower bib number compared to Filippelli and Llewellin.

Despite hitting all of his first 30 clays, United States’ 29-year-old Frank Thompson missed the podium, as he only crushed 7 of the following 10 and concluded with 37 out of 40, taking 4th position on the table. The American was followed by the current Olympic and World Champion Gabriele Rossetti, who missed a single target in each of his first two stations and concluded in 5th place with 28 target hits out of 30.

The first shooter eliminated from the match was Cyprus’ Georgios Achilleos (36), who crushed only 13 of his first 20 targets and took 6th place.

Final 10m Air Rifle Women

ISSF World Cup Final Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · New Delhi, IND

The Serbian shooter ruled the women’s 10m Air Rifle final since the very first shot, doubling the title won in Bologna (ITA) in 2016. Alongside her on the podium, Romania’s Laura-Georgeta Coman and People’s Republic of China’s Peng Xinyi, who respectively took Silver and Bronze.
Absolutely dominant. There’s no other way to describe Andrea Arsovic’s performance in the women’s 10m Air Rifle final at the ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi (IND).

The Serbian 30-year-old led the match since the very first series, when she scored 52.7 points, took the top position and never looked back, nailing an unbelievable series of 23 consecutive shots inside the 10th ring, and only missing it with the last one.

“I was a bit nervous because I knew that I was close to the World Record,” Arsovic said. “So that 9.7 is a bit disappointing for me.”

“It feels great anyway, it’s the second time in a row that I win this trophy and I couldn’t be happier,” she continued. “Now I’ll take a quick break, maybe for a short holiday. Next year will be very intense, there will be a lot of competition and everyone’s focus is on the ISSF World Championship.”

“I think my experience played some role in the match,” concluded Arsovic, who was the only 30-something shooter on the firing line.

Despite placing 8th at the end of the first 5-shot series, 24-year-old Romanian shooter Laura-Georgeta Coman climbed back up to the 2nd place, where she finished with 249.7 points and collected the first World Cup Final medal of her career.

Alongside Arsovic and Coman, the podium was completed by People’s Republic of China’s 20-year-old Peng Xinyi, who secured the Bronze medal in her first World Cup Final participation. Peng final score was 228.5 points, while her teammate Shi Mengyao (19) finished with 186.0, failing to add another achievement to the World Cup Gold and Silver she won this year.

Just outside of the podium, Norway’s Malin Westerheim (23) sealed her debut in this competition with 207.4 points, taking 4th place.

After surviving a shoot-off against Singapore’s Jasmine Ser Xiang Wei, Sadeghian Armina of the Islamic Republic of Iran finished in 6th place, after losing another tie-breaking shoo-off against Westerheim. In her first World Cup Final participation and competing as the youngest participant of the final, 15-year-old Armina scored 165.3 points, while 27-year-old Ser took 7th place with 144.3.

The current leader of the world ranking and Rio 2016 Olympic Champion, 20-year-old Virginia Thrasher of the United States of America, finished in 8th position and scored 122.4 points.

All finals will be streamed live on the ISSF website, on the Federation’s Livestream channel, on its official Facebook page and on the Olympic Channel.

Experienced Japanese Pistol shooter Tomoyuki Matsuda raised his first ISSF World Cup Final trophy in New Delhi (IND), where he ruled the 10m Air Pistol Men final and added another Gold to the one he won in the very same range a few month ago during the ISSF World Cup Stage 1.

Matsuda, a former ISSF World Champion in this event, shot two remarkable series midway through the final, adding a 10.5-10.9 combination in the 6th series to the 10.5-10.7 he scored in the previous one. There, he definitely claimed and strengthened his lead, finishing with 241.8 points and finally claiming the ISSF crystal globe.

With his score, Matsuda also set a new World Record, besting the one set by Germany’s Christian Reitz at the 2017 European Championship in Maribor (SLO).

Alongside him on the second step of the podium placed Ukrainian sensation Pavlo Korostylov, competing in his second World Cup Final at the age of 19 years old. Despite a remarkable second half of the match, Korostylov was not able to match Matuda’s pace, finishing with 241.1 points and the Silver medal around his neck. The young Ukrainian shooter also equaled the Junior World Record in this event.

His more experienced teammate Oleh Omelchuk (34) completed the 10m Air Pistol Men podium, taking Bronze medal with 218.8 points and adding it to the World Cup Final Gold he won in Bangkok (THA) in 2008 and to the Bronze he won in Munich (GER) in 2013.

The two Serbian shooters who qualified for the final placed just outside of the medal positions, as World Cup Final title defender Damir Mikec (33) took 4th place with 197.9 points, while 33-year-old Dimitrije Grgic sealed his first World Cup Final start with a 5th place and 177.4 points scored.

Final Skeet Women

ISSF World Cup Final Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · New Delhi, IND
The United States’ Skeet shooter emerged from a never-ending shoot-off against the current Olympic Champion, Diana Bacosi of Italy, after they both equaled the World Record. United States’ reigning World Champion Dania Jo Vizzi completed the podium and took 3rd place.
At the end of an incredible match, once again, it was legendary Skeet shooter Kimberly Rhode who walked to the highest step of the podium.

This time she did it at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi (IND), where the 38-year-old American won her third ISSF World Cup Final title. The second consecutive after the one she secured in Rome (ITA) last year.

Leading a trio of United States’ finalists that also included 22-year-old Dania Vizzi and 26-year-old Caitlin Connor, Rhode grabbed and maintained the top position all along the final match, despite an unusual double-miss on station 4, but failed to distance herself from Italy’s reigning Olympic Champion Diana Bacosi.

The 34-year-old Italian shooter missed four of her first 20 targets, then entering an unbelievable streak of 46 consecutive hits that allowed her to match Rhode’s final score of 56 hits out of 60: the Equalled World Record.

In the following shoot-off, despite a couple of breaks due to technical reasons, they both kept shooting outstandingly, and it took 22 additional targets to see Bacosi miss and surrender to Rhode.

“A lot of things happened during this final, but I think that’s typical with any event.” Said Rhode at the end of the award ceremony. “You just roll with the punches and hope for the best outcome… And this is the best outcome you can have! I couldn’t be happier!”

“I’ll get back into training now,” she added. “We’ll shoot through the whole winter, but I won’t take part in any competition until next year. I’ll be looking forward to the first two World Cup stages, I’ve already qualified to compete there.”

The Bronze medal was awarded to first-time World Cup Final participant Dania Jo Vizzi, as she crushed 44 out of 50 targets and secured her third medal of the ISSF season after the Golds won at the World Cup stage in Larnaka (CYP) and at the ISSF World Championship in Moscow (RUS).

Vizzi was followed by her other teammate, Caitlin Connor, who missed two targets at a crucial stage and took 4th place with 32 hits out of 40 clays.

Competing in her third World Cup Final, Italy’s second finalist Simona Scocchetti (32) entered the top-6 for the first time, eventually landing in 5th place with 25 target hits out of 30: the best result of her career in this competition.

People’s Republic of China’s 28-year-old Wei Meng, currently ranked 7th in the world, finished in 6th positions with 15 hits out of 20 clays.

Final 10m Air Rifle Men

ISSF World Cup Final Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · New Delhi, IND

The 20-year-old Rifle shooter won a thrilling 10m Air Rifle Men final, besting Belarus’ experienced shooter Vitali Bubnovich at the last shot, while his teammate Peter Sidi took Bronze.
Hungary’s 20-year-old Rifle shooter Istvan Peni secured the ISSF World Cup Final trophy at the Dr. Karni Shooting Range, where he won a thrilling duel in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event against Belarus’ 42-year-old Vitali Bubnovich.

After entering the final with the highest qualification score, Peni shot remarkably all along the match, missing the 10th ring only twice in the whole performance, and nailing a 10.5-or-higher score with 13 of his 24 shots.

Paired with Bubnovich at the 229.3 mark with two shots left to fire, Peni hit a 10.5-10.0 combination, besting his rival’s score on both rounds and signing his first ISSF World Cup Final trophy with the Equaled Junior World Record: 249.8 points.

Despite missing the first step of the podium, 42-year-old Bubnovich celebrated his first medal in an ISSF World Cup Final, finishing with 249.5 points and the Silver medal around his neck.

“The match was great, very exciting,” said Peni after the medal ceremony. “I felt good since the sighting shots, and the level of everyone’s shooting was pretty high. I was keeping an eye on the scoreboard this time, so I knew I was tied with Bubnovich before the last series.”

“I’ll be competing in the Bundesliga as soon as I come back to Europe,” he concluded. “Actually, I missed a match because of the World Cup Final, so I send my greetings and best wishes to my team!”

The third step of the podium was taken by Peni’s teammate Peter Sidi (39), holder of the 2016 ISSF World Cup Final title, who secured the Bronze medal with 228.5 points. It’s his seventh World Cup Final medal in this event, the eighth overall.
