#UnitedBy the Flame: the lighting of the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games

3rd Youth Olympic Games · Buenos Aires, ARG
The tour of the torch will officially kick off on August 5th, when the sacred flame will land in La Plata (ARG). Many Argentinian cities will be touched by the tour, which is going to conclude on October 6th in Buenos Aires (ARG).
The Flame Lightning Ceremony for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games took place at the historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens (GRE) on Tuesday, July 24th, the location of the first edition of the Olympic Games in the modern era in 1896. The flame for the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games was lit by the sun’s rays reflected in a parabolic mirror. The high priestess from the Temple of Hera passed on the torch to the first relay runner, marking the start of the Torch Tour.

The Torch Tour will be shared through the #UnitedBy the Flame campaign, which will invite social media users to carry their own digital flame. The initiative, which is to be launched in the coming weeks, is part of the #UnitedBy concept created by the International Olympic Committee to promote the values of Olympism around the world.

“Within 74 days, in an Opening Ceremony welcoming everyone, the Youth Olympic flame will be celebrated by hundreds of thousands on the streets of Buenos Aires. Millions will see it shine through their televisions and social networks throughout the world. Its light will inspire the young athletes,” said Mr. Gerardo Werthein, IOC Member and Chairman of the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Organising Committee.

The Torch Tour will officially kick off on August 5th, when the sacred flame will arrive in La Plata — the capital city of Buenos Aires province — and the first relay will take place. The 60-day journey will come to an end on October 6th at the Obelisk in Buenos Aires for the first Olympic Opening Ceremony to take place in a city centre and outside traditional stadiums.

The relay will extend for a kilometer, in which 10 torch bearers will pass on the sacred fire from torch to torch. La Plata, Paraná, Santa Fe, Puerto Iguazú, Corrientes, San Salvador de Jujuy, Salta, San Miguel de Tucumán, San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, La Rioja, Mendoza, San Juan, Córdoba, Neuquén, Bariloche, Ushuaia and Buenos Aires are the cities that will be touched by the torch.

The Youth Olympic flame will arrive in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, July 25th, and it will be received in an official ceremony on Thursday, July 26th, taking place at the Youth Olympic Village.
