06/28/16

1728 athletes coming from 115 nations participated in this year’s ISSF World Cup Series, which will be closed by the two World Cup Finals in October.

The 2016 ISSF World Cup in Baku finished in style today, with a great men’s Skeet final won by Nikolay Teplyy of the Russia Federation.

The 28-year old first-time finalist beat Egypt’s Azmy Mehelba (25) in a shoot-off for gold by 2 to 1 hits, as the two tied with 15 hits at the end of the medal match. Teplyy ha qualified with 123 hits, and then scored a perfect 16 in the semi-final, on his way to the podium.

Italy’s world record holder Tammaro Cassandro (23) beat the second Egyptian finalist Mostafa Hamdy (44) by 16 to 11 hits, to win bronze with 5 hits of advantage on his opponent.

Earlier today, Petar Gorsa of Croatia won his first world cup gold, as he triumphed in the men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions event. The Croatian shooter won the match with a small margin of 0.6 points over India’s 35-year old Sanjeev Rajput, who claimed silver with 456.9 points, while Republic of Korea’s Kim Hyeonjun (23) took the bronze with 445.5 points.

640 shooters coming from 80 countries competed here in Baku in 15 Olympic shooting events in the Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun disciplines, starting from June 20.

Croatia finished atop of the medals standings of the event thanks to Gorsa, who won a gold today and a bronze at the men’s 50m Rifle Prone, and to his teammate Snejana Pejcic, the winner of the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions final. The People’s Republic of China followed in second place, with 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze, while the Republic of Korea collected the highest number of medals, 7, finishing in third place with 1 gold and 6 bronze.

Baku’s was the last world cup stage of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series, which started in Bangkok (THA) last March, and passed through Nicosia (CYP), Rio de Janeiro (BRA), Munich (GER) and San Marino (SMR). Some 1728 athletes coming from 115 nations participated in the competitions, trying to gain points to access the Finals.

The ISSF World Cup Finals, which will assign the titles at the end of the season, will take place in Italy, next October. The ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Final will be held in Bologna, from the 4th through the 10th, while the Shotgun World Cup Final will be hosted in Rome, from the 10th through the 16th. There, the athletes who qualified through the world cup stages, will meet the defending champions as well as the Rio 2016 Olympic medalists.
