Prosperi postpones honeymoon to win Trap final. “My wife’s an athlete, she understands”

Final Trap Men

ISSF World Cup Shotgun · Tucson, USA

The Italian first-time finalist postponed his honeymoon to be here and to compete in the ISSF World Cup in Tucson. A choice that paid off, as he walks out of the competition with the gold medal around his neck. He plaid it safe, though: “My wife is a professional athlete too, so she understands this.”
Simone Lorenzo Prosperi of Italy won today’s Trap Men Final at the last ISSF World Cup stage of the season, held at the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club, in Arizona, USA.

The 33-year old athlete claimed his first world cup medal in career with a score of 43 hits, beating his teammate Erminio Frasca, who closed the match in second with a tally of 41 targets.

The two athletes shot shoulder and shoulder throughout the whole match, and it was only in the second half of the final round that Prosperi gained two targets of advantage over Frasca.

Great Britain’s first-time finalist Nathan Hales, 22, followed the two Italians in third place, gaining his first ISSF World Cup medal with 30 hits.

Prosperi said:

“This is a great wedding present. I got married two weeks ago. I postponed my honeymoon for this!”

“My wife Elsa is also a professional athlete (Elsa Caputo, an Italian rifle shooter, ed.). She understands.”

“Today’s was my first final in a world cup, and it couldn’t have finished in a better way,” he added.

Back in 2014, Prosperi had already participated in a world cup event here in Arizona, placing in 23rd. “I had competed here in Tucson also four years ago - he continued - Many things have changed since then, and I should thank all the people who have helped me to improve and become more consistent.”

“I was a bit nervous at the beginning of today’s match. It was especially difficult when a clay machine broke down for a few minutes and we had to wait for it to be fixed. Pressure was mounting. But then I got into the flow, found my rhythm, and I managed to keep my emotions under control.”

Prosperi, who recorded his fourth world cup appearance today, prevailed over his experienced teammate Erminio Frasca, 35, a twenty-time world cup participant, as well a Beijing 2008 Olympic finalist.

“Competing neck and neck with my teammate Frasca is something special. He has a lot of experience. We know each other since years, we shared so many competitions back in Italy… I am happy he climbed onto the podium with me, Italy’s a strong team.”

Three first-time finalists followed today’s medalists. France’s Sebastien Guerrero and Antonin Desert closed the final in 4th and 6th place, with 26 and 16 hits, respectively. Between them, Zhou Feixiang scored 21 targets to finish in 5th.

Thanks to Prosperi’s and Frasca’s gold and silver, Italy propelled atop fo the intermediate medals standing of the competition, with a total tally of 1 gold and 2 silver medals, when only one medal event (the Mixed Team) is left to go.

Twenty-4 teams will line up tomorrow, for the Trap Mixed Team event. The final will take place at 3.00 PM (GMT-7), and it will be broadcasted live on the ISSF websiteFacebook page and LiveStream channel.

Lee (KOR) wins men’s Skeet final, looks forward to World Championship on his home turf

Final Skeet Men

ISSF World Cup Shotgun · Tucson, USA

The first-time medalist led the competition from the qualifications right to the last final’s shot. In less then two months, he will participate in the ISSF World Championship to be held on his home turf, in Changwon, South Korea.
outh Korea’s Lee Jongjun won the men’s Skeet final at the 2018 ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Tucson, Arizona, USA, today.

The 28-year old shooter secured his first international medal with a final score of 54 hits, after leading throughout the whole match.

Lee had finished the qualifications atop of the leaderboard with 123 hits. When the final started (and the scores were set back to zero), Lee missed a clay on his very first station. But, keeping up with the pressure, he zeroed-in and shot an excellent match, missing just five more targets right to the end.

The Korean athlete shot head and head with Italy’s Giancarlo Tazza, who finished in second place claiming silver with 53 hits after chasing his Korean opponents for the whole match.

Today’s turned out to be the first world cup medal won by the 29-year old Italian shooter, who was no stranger to the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club, having recorded his best world cup finish - a 5th place - here in 2012.

“I can’t believe that I won this competition, it’s my first time out here and I did not expect it.” Said Lee, who is currently ranked 22nd in the world, and whose best world cup placement had been a sixth place in Changwon, earlier this year.

“This range is amazing. Yet it’s challenging. The background is quite difficult to read, and it requires a lot of concentration to see the targets against it. I did a lot of visualization exercises, before and during the match, and that helped me on the way to the top.”

“It feels amazing, and I am definitely hungry for more medals,” the South Korean athlete continued.

“In less then two months, the ISSF World Championship will be held in my country, in Changwon. I am looking forward to that. I am aiming at the world title.”

Following Lee and Tazza, it was the two-time world cup winner Stefan Nilsson of Sweden, 27, of Sweden, who pocketed the Bronze with 42 hits. He and his teammate Marcus Svensson (6th with 13 hits) were penalized by a 1-hit-deduction due to reporting late for the final. That extra target wouldn’t have changed the final result anyway, as Nilsson ranked two targets behind Tazza at the moment of his elimination.

Norway’s Engen Jorgen and USA’s Frank Thompson followed in fourth and fifth place, with 32 and 24 hits, respectively.

The ISSF Shotgun Wolrd Cup in Tucson will continue tomorrow with the Trap pre-event training. The women’s Trap competition will then start on July 15. The next medal event, the women’s Trap Final, will take place on July 16.

The Final match will take place at 3.00 PM (GMT-7) and it will be broadcasted live on the ISSF websiteFacebook pageand LiveStream channel.

USA’s 6-time Olympic medalist Kimberly Rhode won today’s Skeet Women Final, the opening match of the ISSF World Cup in Tucson, Arizona.

The 38-year old athletes shot neck and neck with her teammate Caitling Connor right to the last target and beyond, in order to secure the brightest medal. The two US finalists tied after the last shot with an equal final score of 55 hits out of 60 targets, and the medal standing was decided through a shoot-off. There, it was Rhode who nailed the gold with 4 targets, leaving Connor in second place with 3 hits.

Today’s was Rhode’s third ISSF World Cup Gold medal of the season, following Guadalajara’s and Changwon’s victories.

While speaking to ISSF TV after the final, Rhode said:

“To be out there with my teammate is just the best feeling ever. When you’re competing head and head, back and forth like that, it’s anyone’s game. Gold, silver… it doesn’t really matter. I couldn’t be happier for both me and my teammate.”

“Keeping you cool comes from the experience, having been out there so many times,” she added,  commenting on the difficult conditions she had to face during the match, with the wind peaking, the light conditions changing, and a faulty target machines that caused a couple of stops.

“My family is here with me. Having them on the stands is incredible, especially my five-year old son Carter who was cheering me on during the whole match. It made a very nice home feeling, and that motivated me through the match.”

Rhode then announced that she is training to shoot three different events at the next Olympic Games.

“I am actually training Trap, the Trap Mixed Team, and Skeet events. So you may see me in some of the future world cups shooting the other events.”

None of the other international shooters is currently competing in all three events, on the road to Tokyo 2020. At the same time, Rhode has already proved her skills in multiple events, winning three Olympic medals in Double Trap (gold in 1996 and 2004, bronze in 2000) and three medals in Skeet (gold in 2012, silver in 2008 and bronze in 2016). In 2000 and 2004 she competed in both events, making it to the Skeet final in Athens. And at London 2012 she shot the women’s Trap event, closing the match in 9th place.

“Hopefully you will see me shooting all three shotgun events at the 2020 Olympics!”

France’s 25-year old Lucie Anastassiou followed the two US medalist in third place securing Bronze - her first world cup medal in career - with 44 hits, and leaving Italy’s 22-year old Chiara Di Marziantonio in fourth with 35 hits.

South Korea’s Kim Minji took today’s fifth place, while Che Yufei of the People’s Republic of China  closed in sixth place with 14 hits, after being sanctioned with a 1-hit deduction for not reporting in time before the final.
