The Russian Shooting Union won the bid to organize the 2017 ISSF Shotgun World Championship, which will be held in Moscow, and beat the Slovenian Shooting Union 204 to 75 votes.
Moscow (RUS) won the votes of the 2014 ISSF General Assembly, beating Gaj-Maribor (SLO) in the competition to organize the 2017 ISSF Shotgun World Championship by 204 to 75 votes. A total of 287 votes were casted, with 8 invalid ballots.
The 2017 ISSF Shotgun World Championship is to be held at the Fox Lodge shooting range (in the Dmitrov district, near by Moscow) a top-class ISSF accredited training centre venue, as well as the main training centre of the Russian shotgun shooting team.
The Russian Shooting Union - Moscow's Organizing Committee – convinced the ISSF Delegates with some strong points. Five combined shotgun layouts will be used for the competition, all equipped with Laporte clay-machines and Elettronica Progetti phono-pull systems. Rest areas for the athletes will be in place to welcome a large number of participants, and equipment service will be provided to all competitors.
Direct transfer from and to the international airport of Moscow will be arranged for athletes and officials. Visas and custom clearance support will be in place for all participants arriving at the official airports, where English-speaking staff will help the teams to get through.
Official accommodation will be provided in 10 hotels of different categories, all located less than 30 minutes away from the range.
The Russian Shooting Union also presented a comprehensive promotion and media coverage plan, and announced that spectators will enjoy a large welcome area and covered tribunes, as well as an expo area and several catering opportunities at the venue.
As the ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber reported, the ISSF had received eight candidatures. USA Shooting (Tucson), the Royal Spanish Shooting Federation (Granada), the Cyprus Shooting Sport Federation (Nicosia), the Federation Mexicana de Tiro y Caza (Acapulco), the National Rifle Association of India (New Delhi), and the Malta Shooting Sport Federation (Mosta), withdrew their candidatures during today's meeting. The Russian Shooting Union (Moscow) and the Shooting Union of Slovenia (Gaj-Maribor) presented their projects and asked for the votes of the ISSF Delegates.
“This results pays off all the efforts we've put into this bid.” The chief executive of the Russian Shooting Union Anna Leshchikova said right after the vote. “We have been working and we will work with a professional approach, but at the same time we put a lot of passion into this project, because we love the shooting sport. We believe it will be a great championship!”
The 2014 ISSF General Assembly is undergoing at the Hilton Park Hotel in Munich, Germany, where Delegates coming from 122 Countries, representing 128 Member Federations, for a total of 289 votes, are meeting today and tomorrow. The Delegates will vote to renew all ISSF governing bodies tomorrow.
During today's meeting, the General Assembly heard the reports of the ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña and of the ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber, and unanimously approved the report of the ISSF Auditors presented by Mr. Antonio Fernandez Arena (MEX). The organizing committees of the 2015 Shotgun World Championship in Lonato (ITA), of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and of the 2018 ISSF World Championship in all events in Changwon (KOR) reported on the progresses of their preparations.
The General Assembly was also called to decide on a membership dispute, and voted by large majority to confirm the expulsion of the Bulgarian Shooting Sport Federation, and at the same time to accept the Bulgarian Shooting Union as a new ISSF member federation.
The ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña awarded the ISSF Blue Cross – the highest recognition of our Federation – to two special guests following the General Assembly here in Munich: Mr. Vitaly Smirnov of the Russian Federation (the longest serving IOC member, having being part of the International Olympic Committee since 1971) and Mr. Alejandro Blanco (President of the Spanish Olympic Committee since 2005).
“I like everything related to shooting sport since my childhood.” Mr. Smirnov said, speaking to the Delegates. “There's a long friendship between your President Olegario and me, and I can tell you he's highly respected and he has been a successful promoter of your sport within the Olympic movement.”
“It's a great honor for me to receive the Blue Cross.” Mr. Blanco said. “I would like to thank the ISSF family and President Vazquez Raña, who has established a great reputation for the shooting sport on the international panorama. I will always be a friend of your sport. Thank you!”
