Italy’s Petra Zublasing
Jin Jongoh
20.01.2015
Italy’s Petra Zublasing and Korea’s Jin Jongoh were elected 2014 Shooters of the Year by the ISSF Athletes Committee, the ISSF Coaches Advisory Committee and a panel of international sport journalists.
Petra Zublasing (Rifle women – Italy) and Jin Jongoh (Pistol men – Republic of Korea) won the 2014 ISSF Shooter of the Year title.
The two athletes were elected as the two best shooters of the 2014 season by the members of the ISSF Athletes Committee and of the ISSF Coaches Advisory Committee and by a panel of international sport journalists.
The Italian rifle shooter Petra Zublasing ended up atop of the women’s rank with 122 points, finishing ahead of Yi Siling and Zhang Jingjing of the People’s Republic of China.
Zublasing has been one of the main protagonists of the 2014 ISSF Shooting season. The 25-year old athlete won two world cup stages, in Fort Benning (with a world record) and Beijing, and pocketed a Silver medal at the ISSF World Cup Final in Gabala. Petra finished in the spotlights also at the 2014 ISSF World Championship, where she triumphed in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event securing her first world title and a Quota Place for Rio 2016.
“It feels great to be elected Shooter of the Year. It means that I won more than just medals, last year.” Zublasing said today.
“2014 has been a great season. Everything came together, and I finally showed what I have been learning through the last years. Winning an Olympic Quota place at the ISSF World Championship has been the highlight of the season. The technique and the mental preparation came together nicely during that final match.”
The three-time Olympic Champion of Korea Jin Jongoh secured the men’s Shooter of the Year award with 113 points over two Rifle shooters, Russia’s Nazar Louginets and Yang Haoran of the People’s Republic of China.
Jin – who had already won the title in 2008 – finished twice on the highest step of the podium at the 2014 ISSF World Championship, winning both the 10m Air Pistol and the 50m Pistol Men finals as he had done at the 2012 Olympics.
There, he shuttered a 34-year old free-pistol world record of 581 points set by Alexander Melentiev, representing the URSS at the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980. Athletes from all over the world had been chasing that score since then. In 2014, Jin finally made it, braking the unbreakable record with 583 points.
“Every time I shot a match, ever since I started competing, I have been trying to reach that result. It feels awesome.” Jin said, right after nailing the record, a success that contributed to place him atop of the rankings of the 2014 Shooter of the Year award.
The ISSF Shooters of the Year trophies will be officially awarded during the 2014 ISSF Shooting World Cup Series.
