Double trap set to make way for mixed-gender events

Double trap, the event that gave India its first shooting medal at Olympic Games through Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore's silver at Athens Double trap, is all set to lose its Olympic status after the Rio Games.

According to the International Olympic Association's Agenda 2020, all international sports federations have been asked to make changes to their sport to promote gender equality by the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) has proposed some changes, where double trap, along with men's rifle prone event may be dropped from the Olympic Games to allow new events which will see more women participation at the Olympic Games.

"The changes have been proposed and there are chances of them getting approved at the ISSF meeting which will be held in September this year," said National Rifle Association of India's president Raninder Singh, who is also one of the executive committee members of the ISSF.

"In view of IOC's gender equality programme of Agenda 2020, the idea is to have more events for women participants. If dropped, double trap and men's rifle prone events will be replaced by mixed team events in the same category," he added.
