Paralympic champion Abdulla Sultan Alaryani already had a medal in Chateauroux but on Thursday (27 September) he took the first gold at the 2018 World Shooting Para Sport World Cup.
United Arab Emirates’ shooter took gold in the R7 (men’s 50m rifle 3 positions SH1), finishing ahead of Israel’s Doron Shaziri and France’s Didier Richard at the National Shooting Centre of France.
Two days ago, Alaryani had taken silver in the R1 (men’s 10m air rifle standing SH1) slightly behind South Korea’s Segunchul Lee.
Four more countries capture gold
Italy’s Nadia Fario, whose grandfather was a sniper in World War I, came in first in the P2 (women’s 10m air pistol SH1). Turkey’s Aysel Ozgan and Hungary’s Krisztina David followed her into the podium.
There was an India one-two in the P1 (men’s 10m air pistol SH1) as 16-year-old Manish Narwal took gold ahead of compatriot Deepender Singh. Czech Republic’s Tomas Pesek collected bronze.
Germany’s Rio 2016 silver medallist Natascha Hiltrop climbed onto the first step of the podium in the R8 (women’s 50m rifle 3 positions SH1). Her teammate Elke Seeliger claimed silver and USA’s Taylor Farmer bronze.
Poland’s Barbara Moskal secured her second gold on French soil, this time in the VI (mixed 10m air rifle standing). Great Britain’s Michael Whapples and Moskal’s compatriot Krzysztof Ruszkiewicz completed the podium.
Team events
India won the P1 (men’s 10m air pistol SH1), the sole team event of the day. They finished ahead of Turkey and Poland.
The competition continues on Friday (28) with the Para trap finals.
Chateauroux 2018 runs until 29 September and is being streamed live on World Shooting Para Sport’s website.

Chateauroux 2018: All you need to know

By IPC

France’s National Sports Shooting Centre (CNTS) in Chateauroux will host the first major international shooting Para sport competition since the Cheongju 2018 World Championships in exactly one month’s time.
The Chateauroux 2018 World Shooting Para Sport World Cup takes place from 24-29 September. It will feature rifle, pistol and shotgun competitions, as well as demonstration events for vision impaired (VI) athletes.
Here is all you need to know about Chateauroux with one month to go.
How many athletes and countries will compete?
There will be 201 athletes from 43 countries from Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas competing in France. Nineteen shooters from 12 countries will also take part in the VI events.
Vision impaired? How does it work?
The competition challenges accuracy and control. Shooters use air rifles to fire a series of shots at a stationary target.
Athletes use an audio signal to guide them in their aiming with the audio signal rising in pitch as the point of aim moves nearer to the centre of the target.
Who will be the biggest names competing?
Many Paralympic and world medallists will take part in the World Cup.
Ukraine’s London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic champion Vasyl Kovalchuk will be the one to watch in the R5 (men’s 10m rifle prone SH2).
United Arab Emirates’s Abdulla Sultan Alaryani is a double world champion from Cheongju, in the R6 (mixed 50m rifle prone SH1) and R7 (men’s 50m rifle three positions SH1).
Any new participants?
Yes, Peru will send shooters to the competition for the first time. The country is getting ready to host the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, when shooting Para sportwill make its debut as part of the competition programme.
What about the venue?
The state-of-the-art CNTS only opened its doors in May. It includes 10m, 25m and 50m ranges, as well as long-distance shooting stands at 100-300m and 600m.
Chateauroux is located in central France and is the capital of the Indre region.
