Sport Week: Dahl’s journey to Rio is ‘dream come true’

At just 20-years-old, the USA’s Mckenna Dahl will be one of the youngest female shooters to take to the firing line at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Dahl has been gaining rapid momentum since her inception into the sport and continues to scale her way up the world rankings.

Bursting with youth and vitality, Dahl remains focused on what will be the biggest event of her life.

“My goal in Rio is to perform the way I know I can and make myself proud above all else,” Dahl said.

“I expect this to be the hardest competition I have ever competed in. Standing at the top of the medal stand at the Paralympic Games has been a goal of mine for a very long time.”

Dahl turned heads at the 2014 IPC Shooting World Championships in Suhl, Germany, where she earned a quota spot in R4 (mixed 10m air rifle standing SH2) and broke the national record scoring a total of 626.7.

Her bid for Paralympic selection was enhanced considerably throughout the 2015 season with multiple top 20 results.

“This last year has given me more determination and drive than ever before,” Dahl said. “I had set high goals for myself and fell short as I went through equipment issues.

“However, I think the challenges I faced have made me a better athlete in the long run.

“When the US Paralympic Shooting Team was announced, I was so overwhelmed with emotion.

“My dreams became a reality in that moment.”

With added strength and determination, Dahl competed at the IPC Shooting World Cups in United Arab Emirates (UAE), Thailand and Poland, earlier in 2016.

“In Al Ain, UAE, I made the first R5 final of my shooting career,” Dahl recalled.

“I continued the momentum on in Bangkok, making the R4 final for the first time in a year.

“Before the Poland World Cup, my coach and I travelled to Germany to have my shooting jacket re-made to fit me correctly.

“This has been a huge step in helping to improve my standing position and make me a viable contender in finals.

“In Poland, I shot a new prone personal best and went on to finish fifth in the final.

“A week later in Germany, I achieved yet another personal best in prone with a 635.8.

“I am thrilled with my progress, and look to continue this upward slope with my peak occurring at Rio.”

After a quick trip home to visit her family in Washington, Dahl returned to the Olympic Training Centre in Colorado for the USA National Shooting Championships where she once again improved her personal best R4 score (637.5) and collected a silver medal.

With just two months to go until the ultimate event, Dahl is looking very sharp and peaking at just the right time.

“When it comes to the big stage in Rio, I am first and foremost excited,” she said.

“I have the opportunity to represent my country on the world stage and that is completely humbling. I hope to make my country, and everyone who has supported my journey, proud.”

An exclusive competition is running on the Athlete Learning Gateway on the road to Rio 2016

The platform, which is part of the official IOC website, collaborates with many international universities to offer courses, career opportunities and tips to registered athletes.

The International Olympic Committee recently launched an exclusive competition through the Athlete Learning Gateway, an online platform that offers courses, career opportunities and tips to registered athletes.

The competition will run until August 5th, and it will offer them the chance to win three Rio goody bags, which include a tablet, a Rome 1960 bag and lots of Rio 2016 merchandise. Twenty runner-up packages will also be made available.

To enter the prize draw athletes will have to go to the Athlete Learning Gateway, join the discussion and comment in any page in the “Top tips and insights” section.

There are currently four topics available in the community: staying healthy on the road, nutrition, psychology and sports media. It is also possible to post media such as URLs and videos in any comment.

Títulos na Copa do Mundo animam, mas Wu e Flavinha não são favoritos

Atirador e ginasta conseguiram grandes resultados no fim de semana, mas é bom alertar que ainda não podem ser considerados "medalhas certas" na Olimpíada do Rio

O fim de semana foi muito positivo para dois atletas do esporte olímpico nacional. A ginasta Flávia Saraiva e o atirador Felipe Wu conquistaram o ouro em etapas da Copa do Mundo em suas modalidades. Ela levou os títulos na trave e no solo em Anadia (Portugal), enquanto ele foi o campeão em Baku (Azerbaijão). Os resultados alcançados fazem os dois subirem de patamar rumo aos Jogos do Rio de Janeiro, mas ainda não devem ser considerados favoritos ao pódio olímpico. 

A pressão por medalhas dos brasileiros na Olimpíada será enorme, e a dupla terá que sentir isso logo nos primeiros dias de competições. No dia 6 de agosto, um após a Cerimônia de Abertura, Felipe Wu disputará a eliminatória e, possivelmente, a final da pistola de 10m, podendo ser o primeiro medalhista do país no Rio de Janeiro. Um dia depois, Flavinha fará as apresentações nas eliminatórias, em busca das finais por equipes, individual geral e na trave, a última, sua principal chance de pódio. 

A vitória de Flávia que mais empolgou no fim de semana foi na trave. A nota alcançada, 15,125, a coloca entre as melhores do mundo na prova. No torneio português, nenhuma de suas rivais nesta categoria nos Jogos do Rio de Janeiro esteve presente, então a referência tem que ser as competições realizadas nos últimos meses. No Campeonato Mundial do ano passado, marcado por muitas quedas das atletas, essa pontuação lhe renderia a prata. Por outro lado, a nota dela é "apenas" a sexta maior da temporada, atrás de atletas dos Estados Unidos e Rússia.

Felipe Wu conseguiu uma medalha de ouro mais imponente. Na Copa do Mundo de Baku, no Azerbaijão, estavam todos os melhores atletas do mundo, como o campeão olímpico Jing Jong-oh, da Coreia do Sul, e o líder do ranking mundial Oleh Omelchuck, da Ucrânia. Foi o segundo título do brasileiro no ano, já que ele conseguiu o ouro na Copa do Mundo da Tailândia, em março. Mas, apesar dos brilhantes resultados, Wu ainda peca um pouco na regularidade. No período entre os títulos, ficou longe de se classificar para a final das etapas da Alemanha e do Chipre da Copa do Mundo e não conseguiu ficar nem entre os 20 melhores no evento-teste. 

No tiro esportivo, a regularidade e a experiência falam muito alto. Felipe é um dos mais jovens competidores da pistola de 10m, tem 24 anos, e vai para sua primeira Olimpíada. A média de idade de seus rivais é de praticamente 35 anos, e seus principais adversários já estiveram em edições anteriores da Olimpíada. 

A evolução destas jovens promessas do esporte nacional é evidente. Na verdade, podem ser chamados de realidade, já que vão brigar pela medalha nos Jogos do Rio. Mas é bom ir com calma. Nem sempre os títulos às vésperas da Olimpíada levam atletas ao pódio.

Jamais podemos considerar alguma medalha como certa na Olimpíada. Mas sabemos que o Brasil entra com absoluto favoritismo em algumas modalidades, como vôlei, vôlei de praia e judô. Esse não é, nem de perto, os casos de Wu e Flavinha. Eles terão que suar já nas eliminatórias, visto que nem mesmo a classificação entre os oito primeiros colocados será tranquila.

Não pode recair sobre os ombros destes dois jovens a responsabilidade de iniciar com êxito uma campanha olímpica do país que busca bater recorde de medalhas e alcançar o top 10 do quadro geral. Eles são candidatos, mas não favoritos ao pódio.

Felipe Wu, BRA, again at the top of the ISSF World Ranking - 10m Air Pistol

The Brazilian athlete Felipe Almeida Wu, winning the gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in Baku, AZE, during the last month, he required his best position in the ISSF World Ranking in the discipline of 10m Air Pistol becoming again number 1 in the World ranking.

This was his second gold medal of the 2016 season, the other was in Bankok in Thailand last March. In 2015, Wu won the competition at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, winning the gold medal and the Quota place for Brazil to the Olympic Games.

Still as a Junior athlete, 17 years, Wu won the right to participate in 2010 the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, thus beginning his successful trajectory winning the Silver medal. At this time, Felipe Wu showed that he would be a great promise for the Brazilian shooting sport and went far beyond, becoming a member of the elite group of the world shooting sport

This is a very active discipline with over 140 ranked athletes from all around the world and among them a lot of experienced athletes like Jin Jungoh from South Korea, current World and Olympic champion and current World recordist.

Wu has a teammate, Julio Almeida, an experienced athlete, 17th place in the world ranking, that will be shooting the same disciplines as him during the Olympics. This fellowship is important because they will be training together it eventually becomes an incentive for both and driving up the result of the two.

Felipe Wu and Julio Almeida will now have a period of 5 weeks of training and preparation for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. We will all be hoping that they get a great result for Brazil.

Felipe Wu, conquistando novamente o topo do Ranking Mundial

O Atleta brasileiro Felipe Almeida Wu, com a conquista da medalha de ouro na Copa Mundial de Baku, no Azerbaijão, durante o mês de Junho, recuperou seu posto de melhor atleta do Tiro Esportivo Mundial na modalidade de Pistola de Ar, 10m, vencendo os melhores atiradores da atualidade.

Essa foi sua segunda medalha de ouro da temporada de 2016, a outra foi em Bankok, na Thailandia no mê de março. Em 2015,Wu venceu a competição nos Jogos PanAmericanos em Toronto, no Canadá, conquistando a Quota para o Brasil para os Jogos Olímpicos.

Ainda como atleta Junior, com 17 anos, se destacando entre os atletas Juniores brasileiros, Wu conquistou o direito de participar, em 2010, dos Jogos Olímpicos da Juventude em Singapura, começando assim a sua trajetória vencedora conquistando a medalha de prata. Já nessa época, Felipe Wu  mostrava que iria ser uma grande promessa para o tiro esportivo brasileiro e foi muito além, tornando se membro do grupo de elite do tiro mundial.

Esta é uma modalidade bastante concorrida, com mais de 100 atletas ranqueados do mundo inteiro tendo dentre eles o  experiente atleta Jin Jungoh da Coreia do Sul, atual Campeão Mundial e Olímpico e atual recordista da modalidade.

Wu tem como companheiro de tiro, nas mesmas modalidades de tiro, o experiente atirador Julio Almeida, que hoje ocupa o 17 lugar no Ranquing Mundial da ISSF. Esse companheirismo é importante, pois isso acaba se tornando um incentivo de um para o outro e impulsionando o resultado dos dois.

Felipe Wu e Julio Ameida terão agora um período de 5 semanas de treinamento e preparação para os Jogos Olímpicos do Rio de Janeiro. Estaremos todos torcendo para que eles obtenham um excelente resultado para o Brasil.
