Chinese shooter Duan Yuwei claims Trap Women Junior gold at the end of a challenging final

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS
The People’s Republic of China’s 19-year-old shooter emerged as the Trap Women Junior gold medalist in Sydney (AUS), at the end of a match conducted under some challenging weather conditions.
The second competition day at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney (AUS) closed with a rainy and windy victory signed by Duan Yuwei of the People’s Republic of China, who climbed on the highest step of the Trap Women Junior podium at the end of a very challenging match, heavily conditioned by the weather.

However, it took two additional shoot-off targets for the 19-year-old Chinese shooter to prevail over Great Britain’s Augusta Rose Campos-Martyn (19) — 6th at last year’s Junior World Cup in Porpetto (ITA) — as both Duan and her British rival closed the match with 36 hits out of 50 targets.

It’s the second gold medal of the competition for the People’s Republic of China, who also climbed atop the podium in the 10m Air Rifle Men Junior event.

Duan’s 20-year-old teammate Gao Wendi completed the podium in 3rd place, taking bronze with 30 crushed targets out of 40 and climbing on the ISSF Junior World Cup podium in her first international appearance.

Right outside of the medal position, Australia’s Charlie Anna Hudso-Czerniecki (18) — holder of the highest qualification score with 105 hits out of 125 — took 4th place and crushed 22 clays out of 35 in her first international competition ever.

Besting the 7th place she obtained at last year’s World Championship, India’s 20-year-old Soumya Gupta took 5th place with 18 hits out of 30 targets, while the third Chinese shooter in the final — 18-year-old Zhang Ting — concluded in 6th position with 12 hits out of 25 clays.

On the team podium, the People’s Republic of China’s Zhang, Duan and Gao secured gold, followed by Australia’s Hudson-Czerniecki, Alexis Elsa Preston and Antonia Katharina Loizos in 2nd place, and by Italy’s Erica Sessa, Diana Ghilarducci and Maria Lucia Palmitessa in 3rd position.

Matteo Marongiu takes Italy atop the podium for the first time in Sydney

Final Trap Men Junior

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS

Italy’s 18-year-old finally pocketed the first international gold medal of his career, besting Ouyang Yiliu of the People’s Republic of China in a shoot-off for 1st place, while India’s Vivaan Kapoor secured bronze.
Italy’s men’s Trap shooter Matteo Marongiu — he junior silver medalist at last year’s ISSF Shotgun World Championship — climbed atop the podium at the Sydney International Shooting Centre, where the ISSF Junior World Cup is currently taking place.

To do so, the 18-year-old bested People’s Republic of China’s Ouyang Yiliu (18) in an exciting tie-breaking shoot-off for the gold medal. Both Marongiu and Ouyang, in fact, crushed 39 of their 50 final targets, and it took two more for the Italian youngster to secure his first international gold.

Walking on the 2nd step of the podium, then, Ouyang both secured the first international medal of his career and his country’s sixth individual medal in the competition.

The podium was completed by India’s Vivaan Kapoor — who previously finished 18th at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Porpetto (ITA), his only other ISSF start. The 16-year-old Indian shooter secured bronze with 30 hits out of 40 clays.

Eliminated in 4th position because of his lower bib number, Chinese Taipei’s Yang Kun-Pi (19) nailed his best placement out of three Junior World Cup starts, hitting 26 out of 35 targets.

He was followed by Australia’s 19-year-old Nathan Steven Argiro, who placed 5th with 21 hits out of 30 targets, after qualifying for the final with the highest score: 115 out of 125.

The first shooter eliminated from the match was the People’s Republic of China’s second finalist — 19-year-old Li Cheng — who crushed 15 targets out of 25 and finished in 6th place.

The People’s Republic of China’s Li, Ouyang and Yu Haicheng secured the team gold medal, while Australia’s Argiro, Mitchell Iles-Crevatin and Adam Joshua Bylsma took silver and India’s Kapoor, Lakshay Lakshay and Ali Aman Elahi won bronze.,

The ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney will continue tomorrow with three more finals: the 10m Air Pistol Women Junior, taking place at 11:45 am (UTC+11:00), the 10m Air Pistol Men Junior, taking place at 2:00 pm, and the Trap Mixed Team Junior, scheduled at 4:15 pm.

The competition will be streamed live on the ISSF website, on the Federation’s Livestream channel and on its official Facebook page.
