SHOOTING SPORT ONE OF THE CORE SPORT FOR 2020

SHOOTING LISTED AS OLYMPIC CORE SPORT FOR 2020 GAMES

Shooting is among the 25 core sports listed by the IOC Executive Board for the 2020 Olympic Games.
The IOC Executive Board agreed today on the 25 sports it will propose to the 125th IOC Session for approval as the core sports for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

“We are very pleased that Shooting has been included in the list of the proposed core sports for the 2020 Olympics.”The ISSF Secretary General, Franz Schreiber, said today.

“Shooting remains a core sport world wide, as well as one of the most universal disciplines. The ISSF represents 161 National Federations, and athletes from 108 countries qualified to compete in shooting at the 2012 Games; shooting ranked fourth among all Olympic sports in this principal measure of universality.” Secretary General Schreiber reminded.

“Shooting competitions have been staged since the very first edition of the modern Olympic Games, and the same father of the Games, Pierre de Coubertin, was a Pistol shooter. We are part of this tradition, and we will keep on supporting the IOC, as we have always been doing.” Secretary General Schreiber concluded.

In an effort to ensure the Olympic Games remain relevant to sports fans of all generations, the Olympic Programme Commission systematically reviews every sport following each edition of the Games.

The 25 core sports which were listed today by the IOC Executive Board are: shooting, athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, swimming, modern pentathlon, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, triathlon, sailing and volleyball.

The 125th IOC Session will take place from 7 to 10 September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
