Jin Jongoh claimed 10m Air Pistol Gold at the last shot 'And now the Wolrd Championship”
The five-time Olympic medallist from Korea won the match beating Turkey's Dikec at the last shot, securing Gold two months before the world championship. “I am not ready yet, but I am confident that I will be in shape by September. I want a quota place!”
Korea's reigning Olympic champion Jin Jongoh claimed Gold today's 10m Air Pistol Men final at the 2014 ISSF World Cup in Beijing, China.
He won the match competing in the same final hall where he had pocketed an Olympic Silver medal, back in 2008. And he did it in a spectacular way, first shooting-off China's Pu Qifeng, and then overtaking Turkey's Yusuf Dikec at the last shot.
Jin scored a total of 200.6 points, climbing up the scoreboard in the second part of the match, to win his seventh ISSF world cup Gold medal in this event.
“The shoot-off helped me a lot, it gave me the right confidence for the final shots.” Jin said. When he tied Pu after the 18th shot, he was indeed 0.6 points behind Dikec leading the group at that moment.
The last two shots turned out to be determinant: Dickec scored a 9.3 and a 9.5 (total: 200.3 points), sliding back in second place and leaving the Gold to Jin, who marked a 9.3 and a 10.4 to finish atop of the podium.
At the same time, Pu Qifeng took the Bronze with 180.9 points, while the home hero – the 2008 Olympic Champion Pang Wei – ended up in fourth place with 159.6 points. Kazakhstan's Rashid Yunusmetov followed him in fifth place with 139.9 points, leaving the sixth place to Ismail Keles of Turkey with 118.0 points. The second Korean finalist Lee Daemyung and the Russian finalist Sergey Chervyakovskiy closed the round in seventh and eighth place with 96.8 and 75.7 points, respectively.
“Competing in this place is always great. I really wanted to make it through the final, because I wanted to shoot in the final hall where I won two Olympic medals back in 2008.” Jin said after the final.
“I have been lucky, today.” He added then. But luck has little to do with his performances: with five Olympic medals, 16 world cup medals and a couple of Asian championship golds around his neck, Jin is probably the most successful pistol shooter of the modern ISSF era, and counting.
The only trophy missing from his showcase is the world championship Gold, and that's his goal, on the road leading to the 51 ISSF World Championship in Granada.
“I am not really ready for the championship. I am still fine-tuning my preparation.” Jin said today. But than added: “I am not under pressure: I still have two months to make my best condition.” The pressure is indeed back on his opponents.
