COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (October 29, 2015)

The final opportunity for athletes to earn Paralympic quotas will take place here in the United States when USA Shooting hosts the final International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Shooting World Cup of the season November 3 – 7 at the home of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Nearly 200 athletes from 50 countries will compete for World Cup medals, as well as Minimum Qualifying Scores (MQS) and quotas to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  A quota spot is essentially the entry ticket necessary for a country to compete in Paralympic competition. For more information on the 2016 Paralympic Team selection process, please visit http://www.usashooting.org/12-the-team/rioinsight#paraoneyear.

This World Cup will mark the second time the event has returned to the United States since 2011and is a tremendous opportunity for proven and promising American shooters with physical disabilities to compete domestically against some of the best Paralympic shooters in the world. The U.S. will be sending the largest team of 20 athletes to compete at this World Cup, with three of these athletes having already earned Paralympic quotas in World Championship and World Cup competition earlier this season.

Michael Tagliapietra (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, pictured) earned his Paralympic quota at the IPC Shooting World Championships last year, and most recently won gold in P3 (Mixed 25m Pistol SH1) at the World Cup in Sydney, Australia last month. Look for strong performances from him and Shaun Tichenor (U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit/Brainerd, Minnesota) as the seasoned team members of the Pistol contingent. 2012 Paralympian Eric Hollen (Colorado Springs, Colorado) will also make his return to competition at this World Cup has he competes in the P1 (Men’s 10m Pistol SH1) and P4 (Mixed 50m Pistol SH1) events.

McKenna Dahl (Arlington, Washington) and John Joss (USAMU/Corsicana, Texas) have also earned Paralympic quotas in R4 (Mixed 10m Rifle Standing SH2) and R6 (Mixed 50m Rifle Prone SH1) respectively. Joss most recently won a silver medal in R6 in Sydney as well. National Development Team rifle athletes Tammy Delano (Rome, New York) and Jazmin Almlie-Ryan (Houston, Texas) will also make their return to international competition after a short hiatus for health reasons. This match will be Almlie-Ryan’s first since giving birth to her first child in July.
Tichenor and Joss were featured in the most recent issue of USA Shooting News – read their full feature stories here:http://content.yudu.com/A3wi5q/September2015/.

“We’ve been close and had several near misses for quotas this year,” said Paralympic National Coach Bob Foth. “With this World Cup so late in the year, that also plays into an opportunity for us to pick up a few more. If our people continue to give solid performances like they have all year, they could be in a good position for a quota place in Fort Benning.”

Several Army and Air Force veteran athletes will also be making their international Paralympic debuts at this World Cup; including Roosevelt Anderson (Chicago, Illinois), John Arbino (Williamsburg, Virginia), Marco de la Rosa (San Antonio, Texas) and Jeremiah Means (Columbus, Georgia) that have competed in the Valor, Endeavor or Warrior Games.
“We have so many athletes who are ‘young’ in the sport and the chance for them to step up and do something at this event is there,” said Foth. “Since it’s late in the year - that also plays into it too. Some may have just started shooting this year, but now they have several months of training under their belts. It’s a great opportunity for these athletes to get classified at a high-level competition and get their feet wet right here at home. For some of them, this their first step toward the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.”

The IPC World Cup will be held on the Pool International Range Complex on Fort Benning.  Though this event is free and open to the public, please follow the appropriate protocols to gain access to Fort Benning. A schedule of events and more information can be found at the IPC Shooting website (Rifle events are noted with “R” and Pistol events with “P”): http://www.paralympic.org/shooting/2015-world-cup.

Asian Shooting Championship in Kuwait: IOC Executive Board revokes the Olympic Qualifying Status

During the Asian Championships to be held in Kuwait from 1 to 12 November 2015, there will be no distribution of quota places nor will there be any MQS results recognized and registered.
The International Shooting Sport Federation has been informed by the International Olympic Committee that the IOC Executive Board unanimously agreed to revoke the Olympic Qualifying Status of the Asian Championships to be held in Kuwait from 1 to 12 November 2015.

The decision comes after the designated Technical Delegate from the ISSF, Mr. Yair Davidovich, who was due to supervise the event on behalf of the ISSF, was denied a visa by the Kuwaiti Immigration Department. The denial of a visa is against the non-discrimination principle of the Olympic Charter. The Olympic Charter must apply for all Olympic Qualification competitions.

Another reason for the decision is the fact that the Kuwait NOC is currently suspended by the IOC due to governmental interference against the rules of the Olympic Charter, and the Kuwait Olympic Committee is not entitled to participate in any activity connected with the Olympic Movement or exercise any right conferred upon it by the Olympic Charter or the IOC, as stated in an IOC press release yesterday evening.

This decision means that during the Asian Championships to be held in Kuwait from 1 to 12 November 2015, there will be no distribution of quota places nor will there be any MQS results recognized and registered. However, the Asian Shooting Championships can still be organized under normal conditions but without Qualifying Status.
“The ISSF is very concerned about this development and regrets it in particular regarding our Asian athletes. We will work under full speed to provide a location for another Qualifying Competition and try to find a good solution for the distribution of the 35 quota places assigned to our Asian athletes as soon as possible. This solution should also include some financial support to the participating athletes to cover part of the extra costs.” The ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña stated in a letter addressed to all ISSF member federations, today.

The ISSF will monitor the situation and inform its stakeholders about any development in this matter.

IPC News - The secrets to South Korea’s shooting success

Following a dominant performance at the IPC Shooting World Cup in September, the team look primed to be the ones to beat at Rio 2016.

South Korea sent a message to the world that they are the team to beat at the recent IPC Shooting World Cup in Sydney, Australia, and team officials have spoken of the secrets to  their success.
The country topped the medals table in Sydney with a total of seventeen medals including eight gold, five silver and four bronze. They also set four world and five regional records across the team and individual events, some of which had stood for more than eight years.
South Korea sent a team of 35 composed of 23 athletes, along with sports psychologists and other industry professionals. With the largest delegation of any country, it was very clear that the team were vying for much more than the single quota spot available to them.
“Even though only one quota spot was left for team Korea, we wanted to check our athletes’ capabilities in international competitions. Also, some athletes had not yet obtained MQS [minimum qualification] so it was a perfect opportunity for them to do exactly that” said head coach Yeoungoog Lee.
“Furthermore, all athletes want to have peak performances. Peak performance occurs when some main factors such as technical, physical, and psychological skills meet. Our team has been working with sports science support programmes for a few years to find and analyse key factors of athletic capability and provide athletes with that information.
“We are sure these efforts will help shooters show their peak potentials in the big competitions”.
South Korea have a great depth of talent and they continue to produce successful shooters. They are undoubtedly the benchmark team in the lead up to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games next September.
“As a result of our success in shooting we get much more support than any other sports,” Lee continued. “In order to prepare for major competitions, athletes live and train together for about 30 days. Not only do we take care of high talent athletes, but also we keep looking for young shooters to develop and try to train them as next-medalists.”
With Rio 2016 less than a year away, South Korea are modest about their goals, but they are also very concentrated.
Lee said: “The number of medals we win and their colours are certainly a key focus for our team. However, the most important thing is that each athlete sets his/her own goals and then does their very best to achieve them in Rio”.
Myungsoon Park picked up South Korea’s twelfth and final quota place in Sydney, keeping on track the team’s plans to better their three gold and one bronze medal from the 2012 London Paralympics.
With their primary goal achieved and a number of qualification scores obtained, the South Korean team will continue to strengthen their squad and work closely with team professionals, including sending a 19-strong team of athletes and team officials to the upcoming 2015 IPC Shooting World Cup Fort Benning, USA, before presenting a final list of athletes for Rio.
The field remains open for another 27 athletes from other countries to secure quota places at the final IPC Shooting World Cup in Fort Benning between 3-7 November.
A full list of athletes who have already obtained quota places for their country and details of the Fort Benning World Cup are available on the IPC Shooting website.

San Marino’s Alessandra Perilli grabs her first World Cup Final Gold medal in Nicosia

Finals Trap Women

ISSF World Cup Final Shotgun · Nicosia, CYP
The youngest of the two Perilli sisters achieved her most important victory, besting Slovakia’s Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova and claiming the Trap Women Gold medal at the 2015 ISSF World Cup Final.
After placing 4th at the Olympics, at the ISSF World Championship and in 2014 also at the World Cup Final, San Marino’s 27-year old Alessandra Perilli finally climbed the whole podium, claiming the Gold medal at the ISSF World Cup Final in Nicosia (CYP). The most important Gold of her career so far.

“It is! Absolutely! I had a lot of 4th places, but now I made it. I’m so happy!” Declared an emotional Perilli after the medal match.

“During the last three months I always got good scores while I was training, but in competitions my head was not there.” She continued. “In the last month we changed the stock and revolutionized everything, I trained a lot with my coach Luca and now I can’t believe it!”

In the Gold medal match Perilli faced and beat two-time Olympic Silver medallist Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova, 31 of Slovakia, building an early gap of 3 points after 9 targets, and concluding with a 13 to 11 hits win.

Silver medallist Stefecekova previously survived a shoot-off against 28-year old Fatima Galvez to enter the Gold medal match, leaving the Spaniard to shoot for the 3rd place, while another shoot-off determined the second participant to the Bronze medal match.

There, Australia’s Laetisha Scanlan, the Silver medallist at this year’s first World Cup stage in Acapulco (MEX), bested Russian shooter Tatiana Barsuk, 6th at the 2014 World Cup Final in Gabala (AZE), who finished the semifinals in 5th place.

Scanlan, unfortunately, was unable to repeat herself when a third and last tie-breaker was needed to decide the Bronze medallist. After her and Spain’s Fatima Galvez finished the medal match tied at 12 hits, the Australian missed her firs shoot-off clay, letting Galvez claim the 3rd place.

6th, with 10 semifinal hits, placed Japan’s Yukie Nakayama.

The ISSF World Cup Final in Shotgun events will continue tomorrow with the last final, Trap Men, scheduled at 1:30 PM (UTC+3). The live streaming will be available on the ISSF official website: http://www.issf-sports.org/pages/livestream.ashx.
