The shooters selected through the four World Cup stages will compete against the 2015 World Championship medallists and the 2014 World Cup Final winners for the World Cup titles.
Glasgow Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mohammad Asab and veteran trap shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhuhave once again qualified for the prestigious ISSF Shotgun World Cup Final to be held in Nicosia, Cyprus, from October 15 to 21.
The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) on Tuesday informed the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) that double trap specialist Asab and three-time Olympian and former world No. 1 in trap shooting, Sandhu, have been selected to represent India at the World Cup Final after taking into account their performances at this year's World Cup Stages in Acapulco (Mexico), Al Ain (UAE), Larnaca (Cyprus) and Gabala (Azerbaijan).
The shooters selected through the four World Cup stages will compete against the 2015 World Championship medallists and the 2014 World Cup Final winners for the World Cup titles.
A total of 60 athletes, representing 28 countries, will compete in five classic Olympic events of the Shotgun discipline – men's and women's Trap, men's and women's Skeet and men's Double Trap. Cyprus already hosted one of the four stages of this year's ISSF World Cup in Larnaca from April 24 to May 4.
The Cyprus tournament holds greater significance for two Indian shooters as the event will take place just two weeks before the 13th Asian Shooting Championship in Kuwait from November 1 to 12, which will act as the last Olympic qualifier for the 2016 Rio Games.
Both Manavjit and Asab are yet to qualify for the Rio Olympics. Last year, too, both the shooters had qualified for the World Cup Finals.
Asab has not won a single medal at this year's World Cup stages but the 26-year-old Meerut-born reached the finals on two occasions. Based on this performance, the ISSF selected him for the World Cup Final. Amritsar-based Sandhu had won the bronze medal at the Mexico World Cup.
The World Cup Final for Rifle and Pistol disciplines have already been organised by the ISSF, which saw the participation of Apurvi Chandela, Jitu Rai, Gurpreet Singh and Gagan Narang.
