The Malaysian national shooting team is gearing up for the upcoming Asia Olympic Qualifying Competition, which will be held from January 25 to February 3 in New Delhi, next year.
After the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revoked the official status of the Asian Shooting Championships, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has decided to create an alternative tournament to allow Asian-based shooters to compete for Olympic spots.
Malaysia’s Joseline Cheah is already looking forward to the new event and remains confident of doing well, having won a gold medal in the 25m sport pistol team event, at the recent Southeast Asian Shooting Championships (SEASA), last week.
“We are happy with the news, now we can start training for the qualifier,” she told The Star yesterday.
“Usually, we will get a break in December, but now all plans have been put on hold. It’s time to gear up for the Olympic.
“It’s a good end for this year, now I hope to get off to a good start next year. I hope to qualify for my first Olympic after missing out in the last two tournaments,” she said.
Besides the Joseline, several other shooters in the form of Hasli Izwan, Eddy Chew, Nur Ayuni Farhana, Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi as well as Muslifah Zulkifli are also looking to secure slots for Rio 2016.
