Shooters from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and South Korea saved the best until last on Saturday (7 November), setting team world records on the final day of the IPC Shooting World Cup in Fort Benning, USA.
In P4 (mixed 50m pistol SH1) South Korea’s Chul Park, Sungwon Jang and Young Bae Kim stormed to a new world record of 1591.
Park’s (186.1) victory over Turkey’s world champion Cevat Karagol (181.3) in the individual event also never looked in doubt as he built a convincing lead in the match.
Ukraine’s Oleksii Denysiuk (158.7) stepped onto the podium for the second time with bronze.
Karagol, Murat Oguz and Korhan Yamac (1578) secured the team silver, whilst the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s Olivera Nakovska Bikova, Vanco Karanfilov and Branimir Jovanovski (1530) took bronze.
Oguz and teammate Aysel Ozgan increased Turkey’s quota places for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, alongside Russia’s Natalia Dalekova. Portugal also got their first place through Adelino Rocha.
Over on the rifle range, the UAE added to their own R6 (mixed 50m rifle prone SH1) team world record with 1853.4 thanks to Abdullah Saif Alayrani, Abdullah Sultan Alayrani and Saif Alnuaimi.
Abdullah Sultan Alayrani (207.5) went on to claim the scalp of Great Britain’s world champion Matt Skelton (207.1) after a tense individual final.
Alayrani and Skelhon were level twice in the match but a 10.8 and 10.7 from the Emirati in the sixth round was enough to secure his victory. Skelhon tried to come back with his final shots, even managing a 10.9, but it was not enough.
Abdullah Saif Alayrani (182.2) took bronze.
Skelhon, Ben Jesson and Lorraine Lambert (1840.0) sealed the team silver. The Slovakian trio of Veronika Vadovicova, Jozef Siroky and Radoslav Malenovsky (1835.0) completed the podium.
France’s Cedric Fevre, Germany’s Bernhard Fendt and Great Britain’s Karen Butler secured Rio 2016 places for their countries with their performances.
Jazmin Almlie-Ryan (210.9) provided the perfect end to the World Cup for hosts USA, taking gold in R5 (mixed 10m air rifle prone SH2).
The 33-year-old, who bagged a quota place to Brazil for her country earlier on in the week, led throughout.
“My match was a whirlwind!” Almlie-Ryan told USA Shooting. “I had just shot in my first international final [earlier this week], already had a quota, so I went into this cool as a cucumber and ready to have fun and I did!”
Further down the podium Great Britain’s Ryan Cockbill (210.5) faced a challenge against Serbia’s Zdravko Savanovic (189.0) for silver.
The Briton trailed Savanovic for three rounds, before levelling in the fourth and shooting a 10.5 and 10.8 in the fifth to take second place.
With the bronze medal, Savanovic also punched a ticket to Rio 2016.
Cockbill got to the top of the podium in the team event, with James Bevis and Tim Jefferey (1900.1).
Slovenia’s Damjan Pavlin, Vaselka Pevec and Gorazd Francek Tirsek (1896.8) claimed silver. Germany took bronze thanks to Maik Mutschke, Michael Beutel and Tim Focken (1884.4).
Concluding the 27 Rio 2016 quota places won during the competition were Turkey’s Hakan Cevik and Italy’s Pamela Novaglio.
