ISSF Season preview: three world championships in sight
The season that is about to start will feature five World Cup stages, one Junior World Cup and three different World Championships: the ISSF Junior World Championship and the first ISSF Target Sprint World Championship in Suhl (GER) and the ISSF Shotgun World Championship, in Moscow (RUS).
After an exciting Olympic season, 2017 promises to be another memorable year, with a lot of action in the plans of the International Shooting Sport Federation.
The season will revolve in a circle, opening and closing on the same range, in New Delhi (IND), where the ISSF World Cup Stage 1 will be held in February, and where the ISSF World Cup Final will take place at the end of the season, eight months later.
In this eight months span, ten different competitions will animate the season, delivering medals and titles to hundreds of senior and junior athletes in seven different countries: India, Mexico, Cyprus, Germany, Azerbaijan, Italy and Russian Federation.
The 2017 ISSF World Cup Series will unroll in five stages, kicking-off in New Delhi on February 22nd. The first ISSF World Cup Stage of the season is going to be the third to take place in the Indian capital after the ones held in 1997, 2000 and 2003.
The ISSF calendar will then shift its focus on the Shotgun events, as the ISSF World Cup Stage 2 is set to take place in Acapulco (MEX) from March 17h to March 27th, and the ISSF World Cup Stage 3 is scheduled in Larnaka (CYP), from April 28th to May 8th.
Two more competitions will complete the 2017 ISSF World Cup Series: from May 17th to May 24th, the best Rifle/Pistol shooters in the world are going to compete in Munich (GER), where the not-to-be-missed ISSF World Cup Stage 4 is expected to take place at the well-known Olympia Schiessanlage in Hochbrück, while the fifth and conclusive ISSF World Cup Stage of the season will be held from June 6th to June 14th in Gabala (AZE), the city that hosted the 2014 edition of the ISSF World Cup Final.
Here’s a recap of the 2017 ISSF World Cup Series schedule:
- From February 22nd to March 4th: ISSF World Cup Stage 1 in New Delhi (IND)
- From March 17th to March 27th: ISSF World Cup Stage 2 in Acapulco (MEX)
- From April 28th to May 8th: ISSF World Cup Stage 3 in Larnaka (CYP)
- From May 17th to May 24th: ISSF World Cup Stage 4 in Munich (GER)
- From June 6th to June 14th: ISSF World Cup Stage 5 in Gabala (AZE)
With the ISSF World Cup Series in the books, three different world championships will liven up the following four months.
The first two of them are expected to take place simultaneously in Suhl (GER), while the third and most awaited, the ISSF Shotgun World Championship. is scheduled in Moscow (RUS) from August 30th to September 11th. The latest edition of this competition was successfully held in Lonato (ITA) in 2015, where hundreds of fans cheered for the best Trap, Double Trap and Skeet shooters in the world, both senior and junior, setting an ambitious benchmark that will surely be matched by the Russian capital city.
- From June 22nd to June 26th: ISSF Target Sprint World Championship in Suhl (GER)
- From June 22nd to June 29th: ISSF Junior World Championship in Rifle/Pistol in Suhl (GER)
- From August 30th to September 11th: ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Moscow (RUS)
One more junior competition is due in August in Porpetto (ITA), where the one and only ISSF Junior World Cup in Shotgun events is on schedule from the 15th to the 20th.
The ISSF World Cup Final, final act of the season, is expected to take place in New Delhi as well. There, the best shooters of the three disciplines will gather at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range from the 23rd to the 30th of October, battling for the fifteen ISSF seasonal trophy and sealing another historic year for international shooting sport.
