ISSF Meetings: Tokyo 2020 recommendation, Agenda 2020 implementations and Championships designation

23.02.2017

The ISSF Executive Committee and Administrative Council unanimously approved the recommendation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic program that aims to achieve gender equality and retain 15 Olympic events. Agenda 2020 implementation and designation of 2018 / 2019 ISSF Championships organizers were also among key decisions taken during the meetings.
The ISSF Executive Committee and Administrative Council met in New Delhi, India, on 21 and 22 February. The agenda of the meetings included the discussion of recommendations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic shooting program, the implementation of Agenda 2020 principles regarding sustainability, and the designation of 2018 and 2019 ISSF Championships organizers.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Program recommendation
The ISSF Executive Committee and the Administrative Council discussed and unanimously approved the recommendations of the ISSF Ad Hoc Committee concerning the implementation of IOC Agenda 2020 and its objective of achieving gender equality for Tokyo 2020.

After an exhaustive two-year evaluation process, the ISSF Ad-Hoc Committee recommended replacing the Double Trap Men event with a Trap Mixed Gender Team event, the 50m Rifle Prone Men event with a 10m Air Rifle Mixed Gender Team event and the 50m Pistol Men event with a 10m Air Pistol Mixed Gender Team event.  This proposal was developed to preserve discipline parity and retain 15 Olympic shooting events – 5 Rifle, 5 Pistol, 5 Shotgun.

This recommendation will be forwarded to the IOC by 28 February, the IOC deadline for international federations to submit their 2020 program proposals.  The IOC Program Commission will then evaluate the proposal and the IOC Executive Board will decide the 2020 Olympic shooting events program later this summer.

“We believe this is a fundamental step forward for our beloved sport,” ISSF President Olegario Vázquez Raña said. “We fully support gender equality, and our Committees have worked very hard to develop a Tokyo 2020 proposal that will support the future growth of our sport. We want to retain 15 Olympic events, preserve equality in our three disciplines - rifle, pistol and shotgun - and offer all female and male athletes the same opportunities. Shooting is one of the oldest and most universal sports of the world; inclusion is part of our DNA.”

A detailed explanation regarding the development of these proposals to achieve gender equality in shooting was posted on the ISSF website on 20 February (http://www.issf-sports.org/news.ashx?newsid=2729 )

Agenda 2020 implementation: Sustainability
The ISSF Executive Committee designated a new Ad Hoc Committee for Sustainability and appointed Mr. Jörg Brokamp, Chairman of the ISSF Technical Committee, as Chairman of the new body. The Committee will include six members: ISSF Executive Committee member Robert Mitchell, the Chairman of the ISSF Judges Committee Peter Underhill, the Chairman of the ISSF Shotgun Committee Demetris Lordos, the member of the European Shooting Confederation Environment Committee Stefano Rosi, the Managing Director of the German Shooting Ranges Association Joachim Streitberger and the Member of the ISSF Medical Committee Dr. Neda Nozari. They will be responsible for developing ISSF sustainability and environmental policies and guidelines, on the road to Tokyo 2020.

“Sustainability is one of the working principles of the Olympic Movement,” ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber said. “The ISSF and its Technical Committee have always paid special attention to the importance of environmental issues. Now, with the appointment of an Ad Hoc Committee on Sustainability, this will become an even higher priority for the ISSF and our sport.”

Designation of 2018 and 2019 ISSF Championships
The ISSF Executive Committee designated ISSF Championships organizers for the 2018 and the 2019 seasons, with the exception of the 2018 ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Final (final decision is still pending). The Organizing Committees awarded were:
