It's Costa again. The Portuguese shooter claims his second Pistol Gold medal

Finals 10m Air Pistol Men

It's Costa again. The Portuguese shooter claims his second Pistol Gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in Munich

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol · Munich, GER
The Portuguese athlete won a thrilling match beating the 2010 Wolrd Champion Matsuda of Japan at the last three shots, collecting his second consecutive Gold medal in Munich, or his third world cup medal back to back considering he had finished on the podium at the previous world cup stage in Fort Benning.
Two of the best Pistol shooters of the world fought atop of the scoreboard of today's 10m Air Pistol Men final, during the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany.
Portugal's 50-year old Joao Costa, who had won the 50m Pistol Men final earlier this week, duelled against the 2010 Wolrd Champion Tomoyuki Matsuda of Japan right to the end of the match, in a great show for the spectators crowding Munich's finals hall.
Costa started off in the lead with three excellent shots - 10.5, 10.7 and 10.4 - and continued with two consistent series. But the expert Matsuda shot solidly, catching him up after the fourth series, and eventually overtaking him by a few tenths to move in the lead at the 10th shot.
From there on, the two finalists shot head and head right to the end. Costa did not give up, and as Matsuda fired a frustrating 9.5 on his 17th shot, he took advantage of it moving back into the lead, where he closed the match with 201.4 points, and 1.0 point of advantage on the Japanese athlete, taking the silver with 200.4 points.
Costa collected his second consecutive Gold at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, and his third world cup medal back to back, considering that he had pocketed an air pistol bronze in Fort Benning, two weeks ago.
“I will have to carry an extra luggage on my flight back to Portugal, to carry these medals back home.” Joked today's winner, after the award ceremony.
“This is not normal, it's an exceptional outcome for me. There's a lot of tension around for the Olympic quotas, I had already secured one, so everything turned out to be a little bit easier for me.” Costa added.
“70 or 80% of a match is a mental thing. Today, I was totally relaxed, and that's the best condition to compete. I am qualified for the next Games, and I waked into the final without thinking too much of the medals, so I enjoyed the match right to the last shot.”
Sun Yang of the People's Republic of China, 22, a young up-and-coming shooter who collected an Asian Championship junior silver medal in 2013, took today's Bronze medal.
In his first appearance in a world cup final 8, he could not match up Costa's and Matsuda's scores, but he managed to keep everybody else behind him, clinching the third place as well as an Olympic quota place for China with 177.3 points.
Sun disappointed India's 27-year old Gurpreet Singh, 27, who claimed his second fourth place in two days, after yesterday's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men final.
But if yesterday the Indian shooter had lost the Quota by three hits, he clinched that today, securing a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympics with 154.8 points.
The 2010 Asian Champion Lee Daemyung, 26, from the Republic of Korea, celebrated with him, as he booked a ticket to Rio by finishing in fifth with 136.0 points, after a close neck and neck battle against the same Singh.
Dimitrije Grgic of Serbia, 30, scored 115.5 points to finish in sixth today. He was followed by Croatia's first-time world cup round finalist Uros Kacavenda, 31, who took the seventh place with 95.7 points after the 10th final's shot. Russia's pistol shooter Leonid Ekimov, 27, ranked 23rd in the world in this event, was the first to be eliminated after the eighth final shot with 76.6 points.

Rapid Fire Pistol - Christian Reitz won the Gold Medal

Finals 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men

Germany's Reitz finishes atop of the Rapid Fire Pistol podium on his home turf

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol · Munich, GER
Competing in the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany, the home hero Christian Reitz clinched the brightest medal beating USA's Sanderson and Russia's Klimov.
Germany's Christian Reitz won a thrilling 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men final on his home turf, today, at the ISSF World Cup in Munich.
The 28-year old shooter qualified for the final match with an outstanding score of 592 points, just 1 point shy of equalling his own world record established at the 2013 European Championship in Osijeck (CRO).
In the medal match, Reitz kept on nailing great shots and collecting hits, shot after shot. The young athlete moved atop of the board after the first series, and kept the lead right until the end of the final.
With a score of 32 hits, he outscored USA's 40-year old two-time Olympian Keith Sanderson - second with 26 hits - and collected his second consecutive world cup medal after winning Bronze at the last world cup stage in Fort Benning (USA).
“I feel great after this competition, it has been a nice one, with a gold medal at the end. I can't ask for more!” Reitz said after the final, surrounded by his German teammates.
“I struggled a little bit in the first two series, but after that all worked very well: I moved into the lead and stayed there.”
The 2010 World Champion Alexi Klimov of the Russian Federation, 38, took today's Bronze with 22 hits, after a close head and head fight against Sanderson: the two athletes were tied with 19 hits each until the 7th series, when Sanderson move ahead with a 5-hit series beating Klimov's 3 hits.
Both Sanderson and Klimov secured a Rio 2016 Olympic Quota place for their countries, as Reitz had already won a qualification slot at the last world cup stage.
“I didn't put too much pressure on myself about winning a quota place” Reitz said, commenting on his world cup season. “At the last world cup in Fort Benning, I just focused on getting upon the podium, and then the quota came by itself. Now that I have achieved an Olympic qualification slot, it's of course easier for me because the pressure isn't there anymore.”
India's 27-year old Gurpeet Singh, ranked 41st in the world, took today's fourth place with 19 hits, beating the reigning Olympic Champion Leuris Pupo of Cuba who landed in fifth place with a final score of 13 hits after firing a disappointing 2-hit series.
China's Zhang Fusheng, a 21-year old shooter who had won a world cup silver here in Munich back in 2013, followed them in sixth place with 10 hits.
The ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Munich will continue tomorrow, Sunday the 31st of May, with three more events: the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women final (11:30), the 10m Air Pistol Men final (13:15) and the ISSF Target Sprint competition (starting at 14:00, GMT+2).

USA's Mcphail wins second 50m Rifle Prone Men world cup Gold in a row

Finals 50m Rifle Prone Men

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol · Munich, GER
The United States’ 2009 World Cup Final Silver medallist bested France’s Cyril Graff in a breathtaking final after placing 1st in Fort Benning a few weeks ago.
Following a head-to-head battle with both France’s Cyril Graff and Belarus’ Vitali Bubnovich, USA’s Michael Mcphail won today’s Gold medal in the 50m Rifle Prone Men event in Munich, where the ISSF World Cup stage in Rifle and Pistol is taking place.
33-year-old Mcphail, who previously won the World Cup Gold medal at this year’s stage in Fort Benning, wrestled between the 2nd and the 5th position for the first half of the competition, and grabbed the top of the scoreboard only after the seventh series. He then had to wait until the very last shot to celebrate, finishing only two tenths above his French rival, and marking 209.1 points.
It finally worked out. After waiting for five years luck got on my side a little bit, and now I won two Gold medals in a row. I’ve been close a lot of times.” Said McPhail. “I changed my firearm, and the custom one that I’m using now shoots really well! That’s the biggest difference. I’m pretty happy, because the Fort Benning Gold was for the quota, and this one’s for me.”
Confidence brings confidence. After you get the first and the second ones it’s a little bit easier. I don’t know if I’m going to celebrate tonight, I have a flight tomorrow and I’m excited to go back home and see my little girl!” Concluded Mcphail.
Graff, who shot into the 10th ring for the whole final, ended with 208.9 points and enhanced his Silver medal with a precious Olympic quota place. He also overtake 3rd placed Bubnovich only at the end of the eighth series, leaving the Belarusian on the lowest step of the podium. Bubnovich final score was 188.3.
Austria’s Stefan Raser, a 28-year-old whose previous best World Cup result was a 7th place in Milan in 2012, concluded in 4th place with a total of 166.6 points. Anyway, despite placing just outside of the medal positions, he received one of the warmest applause from the crowded Finals Hall, as he was awarded with the second and last Olympic quota up for grabs in this event today.
Brasil’s Cassio Cesar Rippel, matched his best World Cup placement by finishing 5th, just like he did during the 2013 season in Granada. He missed the Olympic slot for just 0.6 points, tallying a final score of 145.9.
Master-of-the-house and three-time World Cup Gold medallist Henri Junghaenel, 27, concluded in 6th place with 124.2 points; while Italian four-time Olympian Marco De Nicolo had to leave the competition after the fourth series in 7th place, betraying a 0.4 gap from his closest contestant and finishing with 103.3 points.
Despite finishing 8th and leaving the competition first with a total score of 81.8, Great Britain’s Kenneth Parr, 26, recorded his ISSF World Cup best placement.
The ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup will continue this afternoon with the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men final, scheduled to take place at 4:00PM (GMT+2). The final will be broadcasted live on www.issf-sports.org.

Zhang Jingjing wins 25m Pistol Women final,

Finals 25m Pistol Women

Zhang Jingjing wins 25m Pistol Women final, collecting China's 3rd Gold medal in Munich

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol · Munich, GER
The Chinese athlete bested herself after winning the Bronze medal in Fort Benning two weeks ago. Thailand and Russia also celebrated after securing the two Olympic quota places available.
For the third time in two days of competitions, the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China resounded in the Finals Hall of the Munich shooting range. This time it happened after 25m Pistol Women shooter Zhang Jingjing prevailed over Thailand’s Tanyaporn Prucksakorn in the Gold medal match.
"Even if I am the reigning world champion and I have an Olympic quota place, there's always a lot of pressure in these international competitions” Said Zhang after receiving the medal. "Munich is a special place for me. I always shoot high scores here, it's one of my favorite places to compete.”
"I am extremely happy that I claimed another medal for my country, and I hope I will win many more in the future! I love shooting sport, I have always been interested in it. It's a family thing, as also my father was a shooter. It's an addictive sport, and I chose the Pistol even if I think it's one of the most challenging.” She concluded.
Both Zhang and Prucksakorn qualified for the final matches after shooting consistently throughout the whole semifinal, as they concluded every single 5-shots-series with three or more hits. Zhang, the reigning World Champion got into the Gold medal match with 19 hits, while the two-time Olympian Prucksakorn scored 16. In the final match, however, Zhang led since the first series and sealed her Gold medal with a 7-to-1 victory.
The Thai athlete, anyway, consoled herself with the first Olympic quota place at stake at today’s final, booking a ticket to take part in her third Summer Olympics after Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
In the Bronze medal match, Yuliya Alipova of the Russian Federation claimed the third place after beating Bulgaria’s Antoaneta Boneva, the Silver medallist in this event at the latest World Cup stage in Fort Benning, with a final score of 7 points to 5. After the semifinal, which they both concluded with 14 hits, 39-year-old Alipova already guaranteed herself the second and last Olympic slot for Rio 2016 to be assigned today.
I am very happy for the medal and for the Olympic quota! Even if I was sure about it after the semifinal, I wasn’t relaxed in the medal match. When it comes to shooting I am never relaxed.” Said Alipova after receiving the podium ceremony.
My husband is a shooter too, a shotgun shooter [Alexey Alipov, Ed.], and it’s very hard to manage the two different schedules. Especially because we have two children. Anyway, we will have internal national selection for Rio 2016, and if we both end up being selected it will be our fourth Olympiad together!” Concluded the Russian athlete.
Ukraine’s Olena Kostevich, the London 2012 Bronze medallist in this event, ended just two points outside of the medal matches, mostly because of a disappointing 1-hit third series. She then concluded in 5th place with a final score of 12 hits.
Despite the warm support she received from the home crowd, Germany’s two-time Olympic Bronze medallist Munkhbayar Dorjsuren, 45, also failed to qualify for the medal matches and closed in 6th place with a final score of 10 hits; following her, 32-year-old Oksana Kaminska of Ukraine, who recorded her World Cup best placement by finishing 7th with 9 hits.
Finally, with a total score of 7 hits, Switzerland 46-year-old Heidi Diethelm Gerber placed eighth.
The ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup will continue tomorrow with the 50m Rifle Prone Men final, scheduled to take place at 10:30AM (GMT+2). As usual, the final will be broadcasted live on www.issf-sports.org.

Portugal's Costa claims 50m Pistol Gold in Munich, his “favorite ranges”

Finals 50m Pistol Men

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol · Munich, GER

The Portuguese athlete won today’s 50m Pistol Men final. It’s the third time he gains an ISSF World Cup Gold medal at the Munich shooting range.
Four-time Olympian Joao Costa, from Portugal, ruled today’s 50m Pistol Men final from the 1st shot, defending himself from the comeback of his rivals Zhang Bowen of China, and Tomoyuki Matsuda of Japan.
Costa, 50 years old, took the lead after an outstanding first series of shots, where he nailed three shots over the 10.1 mark, and saw his advantage increasing to 6.9 points after the fifth series. The 2009 World Cup Final Silver medallist, tough, shot a disappointing 6.4 on his 13th shot, losing half of his lead to United States’ Will Brown. Costa, however, didn’t lose his concentration. He immediately zeroed in, eventually concluding with a final score of 194.7 points and climbing on the highest step of the ISSF World Cup podium for the third time in his career.
“It has been an amazing final. I shot consistently for the whole final, the first six shots were very good.” Said Costa after the medal ceremony. “I like Munich very much, it’s my third Gold medal in the 50m Pistol event and I also won a Bronze in the Air Pistol event here.”
“Of course I’m getting better with age! I don’t want to open my 50-year-old bottle of good wine yet. Maybe after the Olympics… Age is not an issue in the shooting sport, the better results come with the experience.” Concluded Costa.
Despite starting the final in the lower end of the table, China’s Zhang Bowen, 19, ended with a Silver medal around his neck. The Gold medallist of this year’s World Cup stage in Changwon, patiently climbed the scoreboard and grabbed the 2nd spot only after the seventh series, finishing with 188.5 points.
The Bronze medal went to Japanese athlete Tomoyuki Matsuda, who also claimed a precious Olympic quota place for his country. Matsuda bested fourth placed Will Brown, 23, who held the second place throughout the first part of the match, but then slid down in the placements in the final phase of the competition. Matsuda and Brown respectively finished with 168.6 and 151.2 points.
Italy’s Giuseppe Giordano, 40, dealt with some pressure on his third series, avoiding the elimination in spite of a bad 7.6 shot and guaranteeing himself the second and last Olympic slot up for grabs in this event. The 2013 European Champion then concluded in 5th place with 129.9 points.
Three-time World Cup Gold medallist Damir Mikec, 31 from Serbia, marked a score of 110.3 points and ended in 6th place despite starting with a strong first series; while Granada 2014 Bronze medallist, China’s Pang Wei, tallied 92.1 points, finishing in 7th position after avoiding the first elimination with two great 10.1 shots.
A disappointed Denis Koulakov, 32 from the Russian Federation, was the first to leave the competition, quitting the race for the Olympic quota and taking the eighth place with 72.6 points.
The ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup will continue today with the 25m Pistol Women final, scheduled to take place at 1:30PM (GMT+2). The final will be broadcasted live on www.issf-sports.org.

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol · Munich, GER - First day of Competitio

Finals 10m Air Rifle Men

China’s Zhu Qinan wins the first Gold medal of the ISSF World Cup in Munich

The three-time Olympian claimed his 21st World Cup medal in the 10m Air Rifle event, adding it to the Bronze one he already achieved in Changwon last April.
After winning the ISSF World Cup Bronze medal in Changwon, Korea, Zhu Qinan, the 30-year old former Olympic Champion of China, claimed the Gold at the 10m Air Rifle Men event in Munich today, where he scored 206.0 points and bested Russian Federation’s Vladimir Maslennikov, who missed an outstanding comeback for just 0.3 points, winning the Silver medal.
"I am really happy about this medal. It's never easy to win here in Munich, this is one of the most competitive environment for the Shooting sport.” Said the Gold medallist right after the awards ceremony.
Zhu rocketed atop of the table since the first series, firing in the 10s for sixteen consecutive times. After the 16th shot, his lead on 2nd-placed Maslennkov was a comforting 2.7, but as he missed the 10 in three out of his last four shots, he gave the crowd an exciting finale, topping his rival after the very last shot.
I have already won an Olympic quota place, and that takes a lot of pressure out of the game. We are all preparing at our best for the 2016 Olympic Games. I really hope everything will go in the best way, and to be honest I am quite relaxed right now. The Games are still one year far away.” Concluded Zhu, who's heading to his fourth Olympic Games, after winning a Gold medal in Athens 2004 and a Silver in Beijing 2008. And after missing the final in London 2012 (when he placed 10th), the 30-year old champion is now looking forward to Rio de Janeiro.
Maslennikov, a 20-year-old who won the Air Rifle Junior Gold medal at the 2014 ISSF World Championship in Granada, started the final slowly, tallying two 9s in his first series of shots, but came out strong immediately afterwards and caught the 2nd spot after the fifth series, where he also shot a perfect 10.9. He successfully defended his spot from Oleh Tsarkov, 27 from Ukraine, who finished with 184.2 points and claimed the first Olympic quota place for Rio 2016 to be assigned today.
Belarus’ Vitali Bubnovich, a 40-year-old who already took part in three Olympic Games, finished fourth with 163.5 points; while Chinese Haoran Yang, a 19-year-old who claimed the Air Rifle Gold medal at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, closed in fifth place, escaping the elimination for a matter of tenths for two times, and surrendering only after the sixth series.
The two remaining Olympic quota places up for grabs at today’s final went to India’s 2008 Olympic Champion Abhinav Bindra, 32, who finished in 6th position with 122.4 points; and to Serbia’s Stevan Pletikosic, 43, who nailed a score of 99.1 and placed 7th.
It only took eight shots to assign them, as the only other athlete competing for a slot was Romania’s Alin George Moldoveanu, who finished eighth leaving the competition with a score of 78.2 points.
The ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup will continue this afternoon with the 10m Air Rifle Women final, scheduled to take place at 5:00PM (GMT+2). The final will be broadcasted live on www.issf-sports.org.

Horário – 8:45 – 10:15 e a Final 11:15.  Horário de Munique. No Brasil calcular 5 horas menos.
