The International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) has invited key stakeholders from the shooting industry to attend a summit in Munich on 5 June, to further explain and discuss the ISSF’s proposed innovative amendments to the Olympic Program.
In recent editions of the Olympic Games, shooting has presented medal opportunities in nine men’s events, but only six women’s events. Following extensive consultation and analysis, and following a unanimous decision of the ISSF Executive Committee and Administrative Council earlier this year, it was decided that three men’s events (50m Rifle Prone, 50m Pistol and Double Trap) should be replaced by three mixed events (10m Air Rifle, 10m Air Pistol and Trap) to achieve gender equality and improve shooting’s relevance to modern audiences.
Commenting on the need to engage with all members of the shooting community, President of ISSF, Olegario Vázquez Raña, said:
“Based on important principles of fairness, gender equity and based on the importance of constantly improvement, the ISSF has proposed innovative alterations to our event line-up for Tokyo 2020,”
“As the IOC’s final decision on the ISSF’s proposal draws nearer, the ISSF is making every possible effort to ensure all members of the global shooting family are well-informed.”
“The process that lead to ISSF proposing innovative amendments for the Olympic Programme was comprehensive and the consultation was widespread,” continued President Olegario Vázquez Raña.
“But it’s always possible to do more to explain and communicate and ISSF welcomes every opportunity do to so. We recognise that many shooting businesses and individuals have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo but that is not in the best long term interests of the sport. I am confident the proposed amendments will do much to improve interest in the sport as a whole, and thus to the industry long term.”
On 25 June, ISSF will also be holding an Extraordinary General Assembly, as a further opportunity to explain and discuss the proposed amendments with national shooting sports federations.
