South Korea’s Kim Jonghyun grabs the first Gold medal in New Delhi

The Korean shooter shined at the end of a close battle against Thailand’s Attapon Vea Aree and his teammate Kim Hyeonjun, who completed the podium in 2nd and 3rd position, respectively.
Republic of Korea’s Kim Jonghyun claimed the first Gold medal at the Asia Olympic Qualifying Competition for Shooting in New Delhi (IND). The Korean shooter battled all along the final phase with his teammate Kim Hyeonjun and with Thailand’s Attapon Vea Aree, eventually reaching the top of the podium with an advantage of just two-tenths of a points.

Jonghyun, who shot outside the 10th ring just two times out of twenty shots, concluded with a final score of 206.3, while Vea Aree recorded a 206.1. To claim the 2nd place, the Thai shooter also survived a shoot-off with Kim Hyeonjun, who claimed the 3rd place with a final score 185.2.

Thanks to Kim Jonghyun and Vea Aree placements, Republic of Korea and Thailand earned the two Olympic quota places available in this event.

Just outside the podium positions, Qatar’s Ali Al Muhanadi finished 4th with 163.5 points, followed by Bahrain’s Salman Zaman with 141.3 and Mongolia’s Byambabaatar Khenmedekh with 120.2.

Two Chinese athletes concluded the match in 7th and 8th position, as Hou Ki finished with 78.8 points and Li Jiahong with 100.2.

The competition will continue today with the 10m Air Pistol Women final at 1:30 PM (UTC+5:30), followed by the Trap Women final at 3:30 PM.
