TUGHLAKABAD: When Kuwait's Abdulrahman Al Faihan stood on the podium to receive his men's trap gold along with teammate Talal Alrashidi (bronze) and Chinese Taipei's Kun-Pi Yang (silver), he didn't see his national flag rise ahead of him. Neither was his national anthem was played.
He was rather honoured by the ISSF flag and anthem that was played during the victory ceremony in the Asian shooting Olympic qualifiers at Dr Karni Singh shooting range on Thursday.
Kuwait's shooting body as well as their Olympic committee, have lost recognition by the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) and International Olympic Committee. Their shooters participating under ISSF flag in the event at Tughlakabad and have qualified for the Rio Games. If the difference between Kuwait's Olympic Association and IOC remains unresolved, they will have to shoot under IOC flag at Rio.
But Abdulrahman hopes for the best. "I pray to God that the issue is resolved before the Rio Games," he said after the medal ceremony. "I was heartbroken when I stepped on the podium and I couldn't stop crying when our national anthem was not played. This was a sad moment for me," he said.
