With exactly one week to go until the 2013 IPC Shooting World Cup kicks off in Szczecin, Poland, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) revealed its six shooting Ones to Watch athletes.
The IPC’s Ones to Watch initiative will showcase the top shooters around the world this year at the World Cup events and in the lead-up to the 2013 IPC Shooting European Championships, which will take place in Alicante, Spain in October.
The IPC Shooting Ones to Watch list includes Sweden’s Jonas Jacobsson, a 17-time Paralympic gold medallist, who at the age of 48 is still going strong in the sport.
China’s Cuiping Zhang claimed the first gold of the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the 10m rifle standing SH1 event and is also on the list, as is the UAE’s Abdulla Alaryani, a former able-bodied shooting athlete who became only the second person from his country ever to win Paralympic gold last year.
The Ones to Watch campaign includes Matt Skelhon, already a household name in Great Britain for his red mohican and Beijing 2008 Paralympic gold. Spain’s premier marksman Juan Antonio Saavedra Reinaldo is the final male athlete on the list, and he’ll look to add to his Paralympic silver medal from London when the European Championships come to his home country.
London 2012 gold medallist Olivera Nakoyska-Biova of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia completes the list.

Sarah Bond, IPC Shooting Sport Manager, said: “IPC Shooting has a very exciting season in store that will culminate in October with the IPC Shooting European Championships, the first event of its kind since 2007.
“Now, more than ever, is the perfect time for fans and media alike to get to know the top athletes in our sport as the cycle for Rio 2016 begins.”
The IPC Shooting season begins with the World Cup next week, and October’s European Championships are expected to draw nearly 170 athletes, including some of the Ones to Watch listed above.
Ones to watch athlete profiles on Paralympic.org will make up an information hub that includes athletes’ achievements, biographies, latest news, images and video footage, and will serve as a platform in the lead-up to these major events.
A number of other activities will also be implemented across social media in a concerted effort to boost the profiles of these athletes and make them household names for years to come.
The IPC’s Ones to Watch campaign launched in the lead-up to London 2012, when a new section was included within Paralympic.org, entitled Ones to Watch. This series of pages was designed to raise the profiles of leading medal contenders in Paralympic sports and act as an essential media resource.
